Riggwelter Ale takes its name from a local Yorkshire Dales farming term which has Norse roots; “rygg” meaning back, and “velte” meaning to overturn. A sheep is said to be rigged or ‘riggwelted’ when it has rolled onto its back and is unable to get back up without assistance.

Riggwelter has a wonderfully complex palate with hints of coffee, bananas and liquorice combining for a classic Golding hop finish.

Bottle at home in London. Pours clear garnet with a fluffy, off-white foam head. Toasted malt aroma with hints of chocolate and leaves. Flavor is quite nice, medium sweet, coffee ice cream, light mocha, leafy bitterness, faint toffee and toasted sugar. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet finish with mild bitterness, more coffee ice cream character, faint ripe bananas, light dirt and fallen leaves. A very serviceable English strong ale. Not bad.

Appearance - Dark amber, thick off white head with good lacing.
Aroma - Caramel and roasted malts, fruity, not much hop.
Taste - Light roast malt, caramel malt, sweet malts, bit of spicy hop, hint of pepper, liquorice, bit of earthy yeast. Well balanced rich and fairly complex.
Palate - Bitter rather earthy finish with roasted malt. Low carb, quite smooth, bittersweet initially but finish is more bitter but not astringent.
Overall - Good quality, rich ale, well balanced and good tasting.

Malty toffee nose. Crystal clear tea color, medium yellow head, good lace. Flavor is tame with little character. Malty berries, with hints of toffee. Too dry and too little flavor. I would not seek this out again.

a very enjoyable ale..a little light for an old ale, both in body and in abv, but very drinkable, one of the first i tried to test myself on and determine the style by the aroma and flavor, old ale was my second guess. not going to say what my first guess was. very good.

Pours ruby/copper with a quickly fading head.Nose shows rich malt with sultanas, dried figs and caramel. After swirling, some banana can be detected.Flavours are similarly rich and sweet with more dried fruit, caramel and bready malt. Finishes weakly on an oxidative note.Carbonation is too high for these flavours and cuts out the finish unnecessarily.

Cool looking half liter bottle pours clear deep amber with tan head. The aroma is a pleasing mix of earthiness, fig, black licorice, chocolate and boysenberry. The taste is pretty full with licorice, earthiness, spicy hops and then becoming sweeter and sweeter with the addition of dates, boysenberry, grapes and red apple skins. Rich sweet earthy brew.
