Inspired by the great Belgian brewing tradition of Trappist monks established over the centuries, Unibroue 17 was first brewed in 2007 to celebrate our brewery’s 17th anniversary. However, the overwhelming success of this specialty brew made it obvious that we could not let such a great ale slip into the anonymity of retirement.
As testimony to its remarkable flair profile which increases in complexity as it ages, the original batch bottled in 2007 was awarded an international platinum medal three years in a row, and the prestigious title of "World’s Best Dark Ale" when it was well past three years in the bottle!

Bottle split at the Kernel, originally sourced at Binnys Chicago Loop just over a year previously, 09/11/13 as Grande Reserve 17. Hazed chestnut brown with a good sized beige covering. Nose is Belgian yeast esters, dark fruit, prunes, toffee, dates, light spice. Taste comprises fruit cake mix, candied sugars, dark toffee, orange peel, molasses, brown sugar, light yeast notes. Full end of medium bodied with fine carbonation lending towards a dry finale. Decent Belgian strong, the ABV is well integrated.

Bottle shared at The Kernel, London - thanks to Colin for this one. Pours lightly hazy brown with a creamy, tan head. The nose holds dried fruits, bread. Medium sweet flavor with pronounced bready malt character, doughy brown bread more specifically, with mild Belgian yeast. Medium bodied with average carbonation and creamy texture. Sweet finish with light doughy bread, yeast, orange. Tasty.

Bottle at the Paul Unwin tasting. It pours hazy deep brown with a thick beige head. The nose is wood, earth, spice, dark fruits, candy sugar, must, toffee and vinous notes. The taste is earth, wood, mustiness, very dry, candy, caramel, vinous, toast, spice, red grape, brown sugar and some alcohol warmth with a dry finish. Medium-full body, high carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Hides alcohol fairly well. Good balance. Nice Belgian Strong.

Shared at a Tasting at KyotoLefty’s. A dark reddish brown pour with a thick beige head of foam. A great looking beer. Funky, pungent aroma, 10% strong, bitter, tasty, full bodied, wine like pungeant taste. Lemon-lime with caramel malts, some funk. A very solid beer, it aged well since I cellared it-2011 bottle.

Bottle courtesy of Deanso. Poured a cloudy earthy brown with a broken off white head. The aroma is dry yeast and red berry fruit. The flavour is medium to strong bigger with some some yeast and zesty red berry fruit. A super beer.
