Our brewer Joel wanted to honour the noble style of the Hefe Weizen of our Teutonic neighbours, with this new brew now available in 33cl bottles! WEISSE is a straw-coloured beer, which reminds us of the ripe wheat that is generously present in its recipe. It is hazy as it is rich in proteins and yeasts (“Hefe” in German). Its flavours are declined around the themes of banana and spices, and they are accentuated by a floral freshness and some citrus notes. The generous saturation and the subtle bitterness definitely make it a thirst-quencher. A spring brew to remember that the winter is only temporary…

(Bottle) Golden colour, slightly hazy, with lasting white head. Spicy, malty nose with citrus, lemon peel, white bread, clove, coriander and banana. Spicy, malty taste with notes of white bread, citrus, clove, honey, herbs and a touch of white peppercorns. Low bitterness. Medium body, with just a touch of sweetness. Tasty and refreshing, with a mild herbal/floral touch. Nice one.

330ml bottle. Cloudy, yellow-ish, bright golden colour with average, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, white head. Wheaty malty and yeasty spicy, minimally floral hoppy aroma, notes of banana, clove, a touch of papaya and coriander, whiffs of orange peel, chamomile. Taste is dry, minimally tart-ish, wheaty malty and yeasty spicy, minimally citrusy hoppy, hints of banana, clove, some lemon, lemon peel. Watery texture, dry palate, prickly carbonation. Quite complex nose, minimally anaemic and diluted concerning taste, very refreshing - good.

Bottle from Geers. Pours clear pale yellow with an unstable, frothy, white head. Aroma of freshly cut yellow apple, grass, soap, wheat, unbaked bread, yeast, green banana. Taste has sweetish apple, banana & pear, not overly estery, against a wheaty-yeasty backbone, rendering it a tad soapy, with solid bready malts. Bitter grass, spices & early hops with a touch of sour lemon before the finish strikes, dry, grassy hoppy, yeasty & wheaty still, with unripe fruits lingering. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Quenching, decent for sure but when I expect Hefeweizen I'm a bit disappointed when I get a hoppy Saison-like.

9/IV/20 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker), shared @ home, BB: 24/VII/20, bottled: 24/X/19 (2020-314)

Very cloudy milky pale yellowish to almost white beer, big solid creamy white head, stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: bit soapy, lots of coriander, spicy, some banana, slightly fishy impression (yeah, WTF?). MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: lots of coriander up front, soft bitterness, some green banaan, bit soapy. Aftertaste: floral touch, very bitter, dry, soapy, lots of spices, coriander, more bitter, fruity notes, some pear juice.
Paired nicely with asparagus, hollandaise, poached egg and grey shrimp.

Senne's take on the old Bavarian Hefeweizen style - not a scoop for Belgium, but still unusual, as Belgian brewers rarely resort to foreign traditional European beer styles. Courtesy of tderoeck, thanks Tim! Eggshell-white, uneven-bubbled, irregular, audibly crackling, medium thick, slowly breaking and thinning to eventually almost completely disappearing head, cloudy to even somewhat 'milky' straw blonde robe with vague greenish tinge. Aroma of ripe banana, lemon candy, even a hint of Key lime cake, potato juice, raw parsnip, lilies, powder sugar, white bread dough, raw pineapple, acacia honey, Granny Smith apples, dried camomile in the background, damp straw. Crisp, fruity onset, lots of spritziness from very lively carbonation adding minerally effects, estery notes of banana, pineapple and pear, some green apple acetaldehyde, sweetish with a sourish edge, smooth and soft-bodied; notably wheaty core, doughy and sourish with very strongly soapy edges (with this soapiness lingering long after), kept 'alive' by ongoing strong effervescence (more so than would be the case in a 'true' traditional Hefeweizen and even numbing the tongue). Fruity aspects (banana but also the apple and pineapple) hang around till the end, when more breadiness from the yeast sets in, accompanied by some phenolic aspects (vague clove) and a citrus flesh-like 'fraîcheur', soapy and a tad perfumey even, but in any case not really appropriate for the style. A light 'dusty' and floral hop bitter touch also graces the finish, adding to the quenching character, while bready and spicy aspects linger on. Pleasant enough quencher by this accomplished brewery, but if the intention was to imitate classic Hefeweizen, the mission was at least partially a failure: this does not look like a Hefeweizen to me (lacking a 'flowery', wheat-enhanced head and too 'milky' in the end), it does not smell like one and it does not taste like one. If anything, this is a decent Senne-style 'saison' of sorts centered around wheat, with much more citrusiness, spiciness, apple-ishness, earthiness and tanginess than a true Hefeweizen tends to have; refreshing for sure and recognizably Senne, but in that sense a very 'Belgian' beer with very pronounced Senne yeast character rather than anything credibly Bavarian Hefeweizen-like.

Cloudy yellow with a lasting white head. Aroma of spice and herbs with a touch of banana. Dry and spicy flavour with fruity and herbal notes and a touch of band aid phenolics. More Senne than classic hefeweizen, which is a good thing to me.

Hazy yellow colour, white foam. Very well balanced hefeweizen, some notes of banana, typical Senne profile, some bitterness in finish. Great.
