Calamansi is a tart and intensely flavourful citrus fruit widely grown in the Philippines, where the locals often make a refreshing cocktail by squeezing fresh calamansi into a glass of rum and ice cubes.

Inspired by this cocktail, Kala is a lightly tart amber ale with calamansi juice and turbinado sugar added to the fermentation. The sugar largely ferments way, leaving just enough residual sweetness and molasses character to balance the bright citrusy acidity of the calamansi juice.

650 ml bottle. Pours a dark hazy copper with huge head. Aromas of bready malts, sharp earthy yeast, banana and dull citrus. Flavors follow same with addition lime tartness on bready malts

Soured citrus and dark sugars and coconut. Deep copper with a decent beige head. Earthy and sweet with dark malts. Not quite my thing.

On tap at Dageraad, pours a hazy dark amber with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out bready caramel, a hint of molasses, and faded rum-like notes. Flavour is lightly tart, with the caramel and molasses indeed approximating a rum-like character, leaving a gently citrusy, caramely and lightly chocolatey finish. Unusual but skillfully done. I like this.

Amber, with just a thin head. Slight haze. Slight tartness, decent, but not sure where it's going.
