Brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground), malted barley, roasted malt, yeast and hops. Fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’.

--- Beer merged from original tick of Taddy Porter on 23 May 2018 at 16:55 - Score: 7

BOTTLE 55CL from dmcchew. Thanks, Cristian Mihai!
Look: clear red-brown almost black, beige frothy head.
Aroma: dark fruit, light roast, toasty, oily nuttiness, malty/bready, light acid note, some chocolate?
Taste: a certain fruity astringency with green fruit light acid notes, moderate roast character, moderate bitterness, some ashes in the finish.

Bottle. A- Mocha, chocolate, malty, roasty. A- Black color, dark liquid, tan head. T- Mocha, coffee, cocoa, slightly smoky, slightly malty. P- Medium body, slightly thin texture, average carbonation, creamy finish. O- This seemed a little more thin than the description says as far as the body goes, but the flavors are nice. The mocha and cocoa notes aren’t overpowering but make for a nicely complex and balanced porter. Maybe one of the best porters I have had. A little on the dry side, but plenty good.

Bottle, 0.55l. Cloudy almost black color with large creamy light brown head, poor lacing and sparkling appearance. Aroma of caramel, roasted malt, nuts, chocolate and dark fruits. Taste starts with moderate sweet caramel malt and chocolate, follows by heavy roasted malt, a bit grainy with mild alcohol note and moderate bitter finish. Medium to full body, creamy texture and soft carbonation in palate. Warming and quaffable as porter can be...

The appearance pours pitch black and leaves the same colored body with a one finger white foamy head that dies within about twenty seconds. Light somewhat clingy foamy lacing tries to cling and does but is kind of all over the place.
The smell is roasty through some coffee and chocolate notes. There is some light malts that come in as it warms, and I even get some light vanilla (intentional or not, I don’t know, but I like it).
The taste is mainly sweet and roasty through the coffee and chocolate, and gives off a dark creamy sticky roasty aftertaste with a dry sticky finish.
On the palate, she sits about a medium to heavy on the mouth and tongue, sessionable - hmmm... maybe, but perhaps not as much as some other porters on the market. Carbonation is extremely smooth and ends up giving off a nice creamy aspect coating the rest of the mouth and tongue eloquently.
Overall, this is a very nice English Porter that I would have again and another beer by Samuel Smith that I would still love to have next to some fish and chips.
