500ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with small to average, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, beige head. Roasty, dark malty aroma, hints of coffee, underlying, cautious hints of blueberry. Taste is roasty dark malty, slightly bitter, subtle sweetness, fruity hints of blueberry and bramble; minimally metallic finish.

500ml bottle. Very dark brown almost black colour. Small tan brown head doesn’t last long. Aroma seems a bit weak but there’s definitely a roasted coffee/malt, a little chocolate. Flavour is pretty much the same, roasted malts, a bit of coffee and/or chocolate too but mostly in the aftertaste. Pretty nice beer, just feels a little weak compared to similar beers.

Keg at Brew Wharf, Borough Market. Black with a thick creamy head. Once it had warmed a little (still don’t understand why craft brewers kill their great flavours by serving the beer so cold) it was a lovely smooth stout with rich chocolate and roast malt flavours. The roasting hasn’t been overdone so it’s not bitter or burnt- it’s not sweet either- Goldilocks would no doubt think it was "just right" and the perfect accompaniment for the chocolate pud that the thieving cow was no doubt about to nick from poor baby bear. Very easy to drink, this goes down a treat. A lovely stout... oh, hang about, I’ve just gone to add my rating and I’m astonished to find it’s actually a schwarzbier. Would never have guessed, to think that a schwarz is a decent stout is a pretty good compliment for a schwarz I reckon (even if I was misled by the name!). Easily my highest rated schwarz to date.

Bottle from Waitrose, consumed at home. Dark brown with a creamy tan head. Coffee and liquorice on the nose, with hints of saltwater taffy and woodsmoke. Sweet creamy taste with hints of stone fruit, condensed milk and stewed vegetable in the finish. Fairly weak body. Above average all in all.

Hele hemmeligheten til en god stort ligger i fordelingen av mørk malt, som denne beviser, og vi allerede visste.
