Barrel-Aged Blended Ale - Dark & Delicious
Our Mélange series is at the core of our experimentation with flavors that cannot be achieved outside of the art of the blend or by any one beer. This is one of our original mélanges… at its very finest. Mélange #3 is a blend of three ales with stories stretching back to the earliest days in our bourbon barrel-aged program: Black Tuesday, our Anniversary Series old ale and our wheatwine-style ale. The combination reaches through the bourbon veneer with complex notes of dark chocolate, coconut, dark fruits, oaky undertones, rich caramel character and warm vanilla.

Beer #15 of my 10,00th Beer Milestone Celebration! Fairly muddied, slightly hazy lightish, but steady brown coloured body with a fairly thin, single centimetre tall rich tan or very light brown coloured head, above the beautiful, but fairly clear (especially for the shade) brown body, about 15 per cent opaque. Aroma of super sweet, boozy and strong bourbon and pitted fruit notes with a lot of oak, cedar, woodsie and especially caramelised sugar scents here with some deep alcohol scents (of course) and some smoother vanilla, rum and toasted coconuts that pop out and add to the complexity, basically from the alcohol and sugars alone on this one - just in the nose! Medium to Full-bodied; Very rich and super boozy bourbon and oaky flavours dominate with a lot of pungency from the barrel aging here with some lighter vanilla and creamy notes, but the toasted and roasted malts really shine through shortly afterwards with a lot of depth and grains noticeable and some aftertaste that helps with all the sugars, as well. Aftertaste shows some deep sugars, a ton of alcohol, roasted and toasted malts, a lot of pitted fruits, some complexity from the icing sugar and caramel with perhaps even more of the bourbon, oak and especially rustic, nutty qualities that come from the barrel aging - they are quite strong here, as expected, however, after all this time in the bottle, I thought they would die down even more, but perhaps a 'fresh' bottle of this would have been WAY too strong, but I'll never know! I sampled this 75 cL bottle as Beer #15 [of 21 - 10 (for 10,000) of Each side of the 10,000 Beer Milestone and the 10,000th itself!] of my 10,000th Beer Milestone, purchased from Crystal City Wine Shop in Arlington, Virginia (as a place I have since boycotted) on 24-January-2019 for US$12,99, and sampled at my house here in Washington on 03-June-2023.

(750ml 2017 bottle c/o Johan, thanks!) Pours deep cola brown with a loose pale tan head and lace. Notes of rich molasses and toffee, bourbon soaked wood, lots of smooth raisins and prunes, toasted nuts and chocolate, moderate vanilla and coconut from the oak, quite sweet overall but less cloying than I expected, with a slight bitter roasty woody edge to counterbalance things, long warming wood-inflected slightly boozy finish with lingering malty fruity notes. Full oily body with very soft carbonation. A surprisingly good sipper given my experience with high ABV Bruery stuff is that it tends to be too out of balance for me.
