Bomber bought @ Olbutikken after Emma requested something with chocolate. Pours oily pitch black with a small dark mocha head that quickly dissipates while leaving a small trace on the glass. Smell is slightly sweet and malty with roasted malts, moist wood, bitter chocolate, dark roast coffee, pine needles, resin, burnt cookies, crackers, salty licorice candy and caramel. Taste is tiny sweet, very bitter and malty with roasted malts, caramel, burnt cookies, resin, pine cones, grapefruit rinds, crackers, bitter chocolate, dark roast coffee, sweet licorice candy, moist soil and moist wood. Mouthfeel is tiny round, creamy, astringent and medium bodied. Finish is bitter and malty with roasted malts, caramel, burnt cookies, bitter chocolate, dark roast coffee, resin and moist wood. Quite good but not entirely there…

Bottle @ de Molen. Dark color, short brown head. Aroma of licorice, soft earthy hops, some roasted malts, laurel. I was expecting a lot of chocolate because of the name, but couldn’t really get a lot of it. Quite dry in taste, medium bitter. I like my RIS a bit more creamy and the chocolatey notes could shine more. Ok.

Bottle at the De Molen July 2nd Tuesday tasting. Poured a deep mahogany with a ground glass hugging tan head. The aroma is mainly roasted malt. The flavour is medium to strong bitter, roasted malt and loads of bitter liquorice. I’m not sure what happened to the chocolate!

650ml bottle. Pitch black colour with small, reawakening, creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, brown head. Minimally sweet, slightly grainy dark malty aroma has hints of cocoa, milk chocolate, treacle, slightly herbal, resinous hoppy counterweight. Taste is minimally sweet dark malty, hints of chocolate, treacle, bitter hoppy overtones with a spicy, minimally peppery touch of green onions; full body, sticky palate, lasting dry, minimally roasty finish. Well balanced, heavy malty, hoppy counterpart with resemblance to a Black IPA.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled in December 2012. Pours dense pitch black color with a small dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big cocoa, dark chocolate, roasted malt, wheat, toast, coffee, orange zest, floral, pine, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roasted malt notes with a good amount of hop presence; and good strength. Taste of cocoa, dark chocolate, roasted malt, wheat, toast, light coffee, light smoke, floral, light pine, and roasted earthiness. Fair amount of roasted pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of cocoa, dark chocolate, wheat, toast, roasted malt, light pine, floral, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of roasted malt flavors with a good amount of hop presence; and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice imperial stout. All around nice balance and complexity of roasted malt flavors with moderate hop presence; and quite smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.
