500ml bottle at Matt’s (thx, Gord S.!). Bottled in January 2016. Pours an almost black with a brown head. Aroma is raspberry, molasses, brown sugar, some sour notes. Taste is roasted malt and hoppy bitterness with lots of raspeberries, some chocolate notes on the finish. It is quite good, but weird for me. Not a fan of the regular either.

500mL bottle, pours black with a small light brown head. Aroma brings out notes of cherries and raspberries upfront, followed by cocoa and roasted malt - smells decadent. Flavour is loaded with dry pithy raspberries upfront, followed by roasted malt, cocoa and a touch of cherries. Very dry, with tons of fruit that has light tartness and fairly low sweetness. Excellent.

Inky colour, with dark brown, but the head dies out pretty quickly. The aroma shows a fair bit of raspberry, light chocolate but the cherry note show through as well. Soft body, has nice milk chocolate character, cacao nibs, and the raspberry is fairly prominent.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a medium size dark brown foamy head with good retention. Aroma of sweet cherry and raspberry notes with faint roasted malt and loads of black chocolate notes is quite interesting. Taste is a lot sweeter than expected with loads of cherry and raspberry notes with creamy black chocolate notes. Body has quite the oily texture with good carbonation. This is closer to a Black Forest cake than an imperial stout. Very interesting but gets a bit cloying toward the end.

Bottle from the brewery. Pitch black pour with a small dark khaki head that recedes quickly to a sheet. Nose is prominent cherries with lighter chocolate, plum, raspberry, roasted nuts, coffee and notes of wood and smoke. Light sweet malts to support a medium+ tartness with the raspberry in the start overtaken by the cherry in the finish. Moderate bitterness of chocolate and coffee keeps the finish quite dry. Full creamy mouth with soft carbonation. Cherry blends with the alcohol in the nose and it is quite well integrated in the taste - dangerous. Haven’t had the original but the cherries and raspberries work well. 9/3+/8/5-/17

(500ml bottle) Pours black with a smallish pale brown head and lace. Aroma noticeably fruit-forward (cherry dominant in the bottle, more raspberry in the tap), behind is roasted malts with chocolate and light smoke. Raspberry is in behind in the bottle version. Palate is equally fruit forward or moreso (perhaps less fruit-dominated on tap). Raspberry is more apparent in the flavour, but with tart cherry juice forming the middle along with a light toffee sweetness, light to moderate roasted malts and a bit of cacao. Dry roast in the aftertaste, a bit tannic and woody. Medium bodied with below average carbonation and no alcohol. The tap version conveyed more stout character to balance the fruit, while the bottle was really fruit forward. On the whole I think the tap was the better package. Fruit character in this version is very nice but I like the roasty chocolate heft to come through as well.
