Combining the mission figs once grown by Franciscan monks on this continent with the yeast used by Trappist monks in Europe, Dageraad Brune is our take on a classic Belgian abbey dubbel.

Dageraad Brune is refermented in the bottle, so pour with care to leave the yeast sediment in the bottle.

On tap at brewery. Pours amger with large foamy white head. Aroma has yeast, malts, and a bit of spice. Flavour is yeast, malts, dried fruit, and candied sugar with strong herbal notes. Mouthfeel light on carbonation. Not outstanding, but still very enjoyable.

Poured from the tap. Clear-ish copper with small off white head. Caramel, hint of toast, light candi sugar, figs. There’s a lot going on here and yet I can’t help but feel it’s not totally cohesive. Still decent.

Good ruby copper liquid with a hint of white foam on top. Aroma is all ruby ale and that high abv is hidden down there which is nice. Flavour is a lot of cloying malt with brown sugar, and a sweet finish. Brune me arse, this is a badly made abbey dubbel or something. Gimme the yeast!

Taster at the brewery. Pours a hazy copper with a tan head. Aroma is moderately sweet with some dried plum notes. Taste is some caramel, fruity, and figs notes. Moderately sweet. Good and balanced.

Bottle, Legacy. Light brown, medium head. Dark fruits. Toffee malts. Not bad. Sweet, bit light in the body. The fruits are muted though.

650 ml bottle. Pours a dark reddish mahogany with an initial head of big bubbles that disappeared quickly but was taken over by a light head of foam as the beer warmed. Aromas of candi sugar, sweet dark fruit, earthy Belgian yeast and sweet wet malts. Flavors of metallic and earthy dry Belgian yeast, burnt banana esters, and bready malts. Possibly some figs and dry spice. A little vegetal.

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver
Cloudy dark amber color, not quite Brune. Not much going on in the aroma. Mild malt flavor, caramel, plenty of esters from a yeast strain that is not too local to Belgium, more to American labs, maybe figs, a mild earthy feeling that fits this kind of beer, but overall some lack of depth, and quite an alcohol perception; the final too doesn’t present enough elements, weak.
Ok beer.
