In Belgium, Old St. Nick delivers a bundle of sticks to those who have behaved badly throughout the year. Just to be safe, we suggest foregoing cookies and leaving Santa a pFriem Belgian Christmas Ale. Brewed with coriander in a rich, Dubbel base, its toffee aromas and hints of fresh, ripe orange will leave a milk-chocolaty velvet coat on Santa’s tongue and guarantee that you won’t be getting sticks this year.

Poured from 375mL bottle (bottled Oct 22, 2024). Clear amber with dissipating white head. Toasted Belgian yeast with feint toffee, coriander and very feint ginger, subtle orange peel. Fairly subdued, okay.

Draft 14 oz pour at Thirsty Hop, Kirkland. Clean copper appearance. Patchy fizz head and lacing. Quite the festive brew indeed. Tons of caramel and spices. Belgian yeast plays a big role, and cools and balances this well. Sharp front. Touches of metallic, spicy finish. Some ginger like cookie notes on the late palate. Unique brew. Flavorful and enjoyable.

12.7 oz corked and caged. Aroma is biscuity, dark fruit, peppery, coriander, orange peel. Pours slightly hazy copper with a two finger bone-white head with excellent retention. Taste is lightly sweet, spicy, savory, no bitterness. Foamy highly carbonated mouthfeel. Really nice.

Taster at brewery. Amber body, small creamy head. Aroma has a hint of pine or spruce. Taste has a malty/yeasty base, accented with the piney hops. Some gingerbread/fruitcake flavors too.

@ Darby’s Gastown. Hazy amber-brown. Medium, bubbly head. Aroma has a little bit of that fruity sweetness you like in the type...raisins and oranges...nice fruity palate. Rounded bitterness balances this. Good raisiny malt sweetness, orange and pear fru

Bottle. Pours a red color with a medium white head. A sweet malty fruity nose. Very spicy, licorice, ginger, light oranges, you can certainly taste the Dubbel base but the spices are just massive. Pretty nice.

Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Amber color, clean, with compact head. The aroma has some fruity esters, it’s sweetish, with caramel. Good body strength, lean mouthfeel, with just light sweetness; mild caramel base, with a vague presence of vegetables and spices. Strong bitterness with a bit of chicory.
Not exciting.
