A deep dark Czech style lager. Roasted and caramelised malts give chocolate and coffee flavours and a lasting cappuccino-style collar of foam.

Draft at the Blackheath brewpub. Poured black in colour with a thin off-white head. The aroma is roasty, light herbal, caramel. The flavour is moderate bitter, with a smooth, earthy, dry, hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

On tap at Zerodegrees Cardiff. Almost black coloured, small off-white head, mild roasty nose. Mild roasted malt, light bready, some caramel and weak hoppy with notes of coffee and touch of wood. Average and boring brew.

Reading. Flight. 01/11/16. Chocolate coffee aroma, but vague. Dark brown. Red hued in the light. No head. Sour. Yeasty. Some bitterness. Light bodied. Not great.

Keg at Zerodegrees Blackheath. It pours hazy/murky deep brown with a small beige head. The nose is earthy, plenty of dirty sulphur, burnt egg sandwich, sweet roast, manure, rivita and burnt toast. The taste is bitter-sweet, earthy roast, rivita, cocoa powder, slight stickiness, pepper and weak coffee grounds with a dry, toasted finish. Light - medium body and fine, prickly carbonation. Wow that aroma is very off-putting. Taste is better, but still not great. A poorly executed beer for sure.

Keg. Appearance is black, with a half-finger beige head. Aroma- hops, chocolatey malt, cocoa, spice hints. Taste- crisp, hoppy lager, with hints of milk chocolate and dark malts. Interesting stuff.

(On tap at Zerodegrees, Blackheath, London) It pours dark brown with a tan head, nice aroma and complex taste combination of smoky, nutty, malt/caramel, and coffee chocolate. A firm session favourite of mine at the local. Updated: Tried again on recent visit back to UK middle of 2014, is just not as good as remembered sadly, bit more watery and not as powerful, or maybe my palate has just evolved over time. Rating amended to reflect this.

On tap at Zero Degrees, Reading, stated ABV 4.6%. Pitch black with a ring of beige head, and high carbonation; aroma of dull chocolate malts; dry and spritzy in the mouth with a good chocolate malt flavour; soft and sweet to finish with an underlying bitterness. Rather light and inconsequential overall.
