In 1902 a blacksmiths' shop opened in Lacombe. It has not closed its doors since. Having made the tools essential for pioneer life this blacksmiths' shop and its kin were the centerpieces of creativity and survival. The idea of the triphammer has been around since the Zhou Dynasty of 1000BCE and modern versions are still used today, here. There is something powerfully vitalizing about the pair of trip hammers in our shop stretching and shaping hot steel; quietly whispering "create, innovate, invigorate" amongst the smashing of hammers to anvil. The flavours and aromas present in this robust porter harken to the smiths' shop with prominent notes of chocolate, coffee and smoke apparent from first wiff and sip. We feel a true kinship to the lineage of craftspeople who came before us and we brew this beer hoping they and you would appreciate it.

Poured from 473mL can (thanks Cindy; canned 03/30/2023). Near black with small beige head. Fairly light, uninteresting, but inoffensive, very mild fruity roast malt. Average.

Pale brown, no head. Decently complex aroma, with some fruit, nut, and roast accents. Light body, nutty, with some caramelized sugar complexity. Low bitterness - robust to me means some sort of attempt to properly the hop the stuff, so that's a miss. But the malt character is complex and I appreciate that.

16oz can pours a muddy brown with no head. Nose has malt and toast, marzipan. Flavors of malt and marzipan and Charleston Chew. Cola and brown sugar too, sweetened nuts. Finishes watery though.

Can at share: pours near black with beige head. Aroma is typical chocolate and coffee. Taste is somewhat bitter, sweet. Plenty of traditional porter flavor. Solid.

Roast and some oak. Dark brown pour with good head. Light tangy boozy finish. Not as good as some of their stuff. Can.

Tasting at Matt's, can
Black colour; small frothy beige head. Sweetish caramel with light earthy notes and spent coffee. Not convincing.

16 oz. can, pours a deep dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma brings out toasted malt upfront, with a touch of vanilla and a little cocoa. Flavour is along the same lines, with moderate toasted malt, a little vanilla, and cola. Finishes on notes of cola. Not impressive.

On tap at Coulee Brew Co. Pours a clear dark brown with a medium, frothy, long lasting, tan head that laces. Sweet aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate and coffee. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, dark chocolate and a hint of smoke with a dry, bitter coffee finish. Medium body with a creamy, smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. Not bad.
