Bitter, which accounts for 80% of draught sales in England, usually comes in three strengths. Ordinary, Best Bitter and Extra Special Bitter. Our E.S.B. is a deep copper coloured, malty ale, moderately hopped with a classic Golding variety of hops.

Medium clear copper and a little bit of foam, soft hops and a bit of malt that's leaning ever so slightly toward detergent. Flavour is weak caramel with some hop notes. Medium on the mouth, vague oiliness. Highly average but at least it fits the bill.

On tap at Longwood Brewpub, pours a clear copper with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out English bready malt and a touch of caramel. Flavour is somewhat tart, with caramel and bready malt. Too tart and just on point.

Draft - Sweet caramel and twig. Decent copper color and a white head. Light grains and a caramel with a touch of twig bitterness. OK.

On tap. Pours a clear amber with light head. Very little to the nose - a bit of malts. Mild flavor; smooth malts up front with bitter finish. Pleasant but a bit watery.

Handpump at the brewpub, 5% ABV
Amber color; small head. Mild but comforting aroma of malt, mild chocolate, cakes. Round mouthfeel, also thanks to the undercarbonation and warmer temperature of the serving; pleasant caramel flavor, with correct bitterness. It lacks the yeasty character of true British ESB, but it’s anyway a good one.

Slightly hazy amber colour. Lots of sweet, earthy malts and slightly woody hops. Sweet, sticky, lots of caramel. Fairly good session stuff.
