Kasteel Donker is a member of the Belgian quadrupel family. These are strong dark brown beers where the roasted malt predominates. The very first beer of the Kasteel range is a full-mouthed beer with hints of caramel, coffee and chocolate. The sweet initial taste makes this beer surprisingly complex but very accessible.

Bottle, 750 ml, courtesy of kajseer27. Shared with him and others. Brown with beige head. Caramel, chocolate, some dried fruit, quite sweet, flat. Medium bodied.

(bottle 0,33l from OP (Brno)) Overall: Sweet strong belgian. Average compared to other belgians. Aroma: Spicy, sweet, dark malts, light dried fruits, later alcohol. Appearance: Clear dark brown. Long lasting beige head. Taste: Medium-very sweet, spicy, light alcohol, dried fruits, light caramel, light chocolate. Palate: Medium body. Sticky texture. Warming finish.

Dark brown with a light brown head. A fruity aroma with caramel and spices sense. Sweet with a warm fruit and dried fruit end. Like!

Well that's fun, a 22 year old beer. Some smell of wet paper, but besides that still very much drinkable. Flat, a bit oily. Sweetness, dried fruit, portified nicely.

Gave fra Christophe. Delt med ham og Halvor på Lillehøgda. Svart. Lavt skum med litt farge. Blir film. Lett krydderaroma. Silkemyk munnfølelse. Smaken karamell & krydder. Tørr avslutning. Alkoholen veldig godt kamuflert.

2002 version, tasted as Kasteelbier. Aroma of smoked malt like in rauchbiers. Very, very sweet taste with porto, raisins, liquorice. Bit tart and smokey. Alcohol hidden behind the sweetness. Hopefully it will develop well after a few years. (6 3 5 2 12 = 2.8) Kasteelbier 2003 version, tasted dec ’03. Malty sweet aroma with hints of cappuccino. Sugary sweet flavor with raisin and syrup.The alcohol is totally hidden by the sweetness. Too much for my tastebuds. 1999 version, tasted in june 2011. Corked bottle, kept in the cellar from the brewery. Amazing how this beer has developed. Still a decent head. Dark brown color. Porto, dust, raisin and toffee in the aroma. Toffee, raisin, porto, warming alcohol in the flavor. velvety, but still enough carbon left. Plums. Very tasty! (8 4 8 3 15 = 3.8)

Something weird going on here. I've reviewed this beer in the past and system has forgotten it. In fact it loses I'm guessing about 15 years a year that I've reviewed. In any event classic strong dark Belgian beer. The Aromas are fresh green, raisins, a little bit of cocoa and dark malt. Flavors are similar to nose, definitely on the sweet side with great carbonation and bit of bitterness to balance. A little metallic in the finish but very good beer.

Bottle @ Salling Ølfestival. Pours clear dark brown with a light brown head. Aroma of sweet malt, caramel, candy sugar, dark fruit, alcohol. Flavor is sweet, malty, caramel, candy sugar, dried dark fruits, quite a bit f alcohol. Medium to full body, average carbonation, sweet finish with warming alcohol. 040419
