473mL can. Pours black with large beige head. Aroma is earthy; has notes of roasted malt, nuts, and wood. Flavour is on the lighter side. Similar to aroma; has roasted malt and nuts, some dark chocolate and licorice. A bit odd, but not bad. Reasonable for a winter ale.

473ml can. Pours a clear dark brown, almost black with red hue and a small, creamy, long lasting, tan head that leaves curtains of lace. Sweet aroma of roasted malt, cocoa, orange peel, licorice, coffee, peat and oak. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, dark chocolate, orange peel, cocoa, licorice, prune, cherry and oak in a dry, mild bitter, day old coffee finish. Medium to full body with a soft, creamy, smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. ABV is well hidden. A solid Porter or possibly Imperial Porter. (I hate when they call it a Winter Ale!)

Pretty roasty, nice flavourly beer. However its a bit thin and could use some mouthfeel & texture.

St. Augustine’s. Dark brown. Thin head. Subtle toffee dark malts...I like this character. Balanced and complex.

Poured from 650mL bottle [bb 05/2017]. Brown-ish black with light tan head. Chocolate and light smoked wood. Medium body. Citrus is but a mild hint at the end. My favourite local winter ale.

Re rate early-mid 2020: Pours with excellent deep beige foam and blackish brown body. Really good meld of motor oil, cocoa, roasted barley on the nose. Flavour is deep sweetened coffee, chocolate, more roasted barley. Full mouthfeel with some nice dryness from the coffee. I stand by my recommendation, and actually will add a point. Dec 23, 2015 - Nice solid spongy beige head with a jet black body. Aroma of peat, chocolate, coffee, oak. Flavour is a strong sour mix of licorice and chocolate, smooth molasses. Wet finish. Nice and heavy with good intrigue in the aroma and flavour, the best Fernie brew I’ve tried to date. 8 4 7 3 15 = 3.7

This was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute. Light lacing clings and then slides into the body.
The smell had a nice roasted nutty to light chocolate surrounding a light cake-like coffee-ness rounding out the aroma.
The taste featured most of the previously mentioned flavors but let go of the chocolate part. A light cake to coffee aftertaste follows and lets a semi-dry finish to top it all off.
On the palate, this one sat about medium on the body with a good sipping quality about it. Carbonation runs really smooth and lets in a nice rolling smooth feel all about.
Overall, as an American Strong Ale, I can see it as a \"winter seasonal,\" definitely. Recommend for dark beer lovers!

650 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with full tan head that settles quickly. Aromas of watery burnt malts, dark chocolate and chicory. Quickly dissipating flavors of chocolate and roasted malts with a faint hint of orange. Highly carbonated on the tongue and a bit oily at the same time.
