Cantillon Zwanze 2013 is the sixth release in the Zwanze series of beers. This series has been released every year since 2008, and beginning in 2011, with a coordinated celebration around the world at various beer bars, breweries, and restaurants. The 2013 edition is a top-fermented abbey ale closely resembling a Belgian tripel in style, with lambic added.

The yeast was selected in collaboration with the Institut Meurice, a college in Brussels specializing in biotechnology. This means that Zwanze 13 is not a lambic, in spite of the interaction of the spontaneous yeasts at the brewery, and lambic having been blended in. It is however another example of a growing number of ale / lambic blends.

At Cantillon. Clear copper with thin white head. White raisins, rye, light spices, basil, green leaves. Sour with syrupy sweetness and hoppy bitterness. A bit too many strong flavors in the palate. Body is thin to medium. Carbo is very low. The bitterness, sweetness and sourness are a bit struggling to go along well. The bitterness leaves a bit of a stale finish.

Bottle shared at Cantillon. Very slight hazy amber with off white head. Light sweet malts, caramel and soft rye notes. Green leaves, hay, light funk and herbs. Then there’s some white wine notes with white raisins, light peach and gooseberries. Light sweet, sour and bitter in almost equal amounts. Medium bodied with sparkly carbonation.

Bottle at Cantillon. Hazy orange/amber with a white head. Aroma and taste of funk, oak, grapes, some caramel, berries and some hay. A bit bitter and with a rather sweet finish. A solid one

Zwanze edition of 2013, for sale at Moeder Lambic Fontainas during this year’s Zwanze Day. Apparently a ’coupage’ of abbey tripel (hence the name) with 10% Cantillon lambic, further ’lambicized’ by wild refermentation. Sticky, off-white, thick and irregular head over a hazy orange amber coloured beer. Strong and surprisingly unusual, yet appealing aroma of old sherry, wet hay, gooseberries, peach, fresh orange, wet leather, honey sweetness peeping through, medlar, yoghurt. Very estery onset, green plum, orange, redcurrant, sherry vinegar sourness forming a thin line of acidity from beginning to end but the overall profile is softly tart with sedated lactic acidity, albeit very refreshing; bready malts and wheaty ’soapiness’ make up the backbone, there is a certain citrus peel freshness to it, and in the end a deep, earthy echo of hops can be felt from underneath the tartness; lambic ’funkiness’ further dries the finish. One of the most unusual ’versnijbieren’ I had so far but certainly pleasing.

(750ml bottle @ the Cantillon brewery, July 28 2015) Pours lights hazed deep amber with a small white head lingering with lace. Aroma is stewed pears, dates, candy sugar or Demerara, tart. On the palate, an unholy collision of sweet, sour acid and serious bitterness. Notes of citrus juice, especially grapefruit, underripe apricot, lactic, some grainy and caramel malts, finish is bitter and tannic with a lot of wood, grain and a bit of pith. Light to medium bodied with a higher than average carb. Well, it’s definitely odd! It’s not bad, though it’s not what you expect from Cantillon going in. If you suspend that it is a fairly interesting if not excellent beer on its own merits. Glad I tried it.

Darker than usual orange color. Funky and aroma hops. Caramel. Toast. Bitter. Sourness fits in well. A crazy beer, so complex. Doesn?t really give a bigger picture. I appreciate it, but it?s just too much...

From notes. Draft during the Zwanze Day 2013 event at ChurchKey. Pours a dark reddish brown with off-white head. Aromas of tart fruit, vinegar, funk, citrus. Tasting notes of tart fruit, sour notes, vinegar, some bitterness, grapefruit citrus. Medium body with a dry finish. Probably my least favorite Cantillon that I’ve had, the tripel/lambic thing didn’t really work for me.

Draught AND bottled try Medium, dense head, off-white over fully hazy, orange-amber beer. Strange UFO’s in the bottled version. Rather spicy, horseblanket, old lambic and old grains or ditto cookies, wet wood. Lambic, but mildly so, lemon and other citrus (orangerind?). There’s a faint bitterish-spicy thread, nowhere disturbing, just making it interesting. Brett/lambic attenuation - says it all. Feels more carbonated than it looks. Bone dry as befits any Cantillon product. Interesting... in the GOOD sense of the word. Merci pour la bouteille Jean. Le fût se trouvait qques heures plus tard @ Moeder Lambic...
