Cantillon Zwanze 2013 is the sixth release in the Zwanze series of beers. This series has been released every year since 2008, and beginning in 2011, with a coordinated celebration around the world at various beer bars, breweries, and restaurants. The 2013 edition is a top-fermented abbey ale closely resembling a Belgian tripel in style, with lambic added.

The yeast was selected in collaboration with the Institut Meurice, a college in Brussels specializing in biotechnology. This means that Zwanze 13 is not a lambic, in spite of the interaction of the spontaneous yeasts at the brewery, and lambic having been blended in. It is however another example of a growing number of ale / lambic blends.

Draught @ Ølbutikken, Istedgade 44, DK-1650 Copenhagen, Denmark.Light light unclear medium amber orange colour with a small to average, frothy, good lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, moderate yeasty, grape, wood, light tart, maure notes. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet, light light acidic and moderate bitter with a long duration, sweet fruity, apple pudding, light manure - farmyard, dry. IMO a bit like a young lambic with more alcohol. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20130914]

Amber colour, slightest haze, cream head. Fruity aroma, citrus, lemon peel, cherry and warm banana. Light tart flavour, malts, yeast, bit bitter. Quite bitter finish, lemon peel and malts. Maybe it’s the atmosphere at the brewery, maybe it’s the beer, but I quite like this one!

[10/8/13] Bottle at the brewery in Brussels. Slightly hazy deep reddish amber with an off-white head. Aroma is somewhat sweet, a tad Faro-ish, a bit candy-ish and sugary, with some sourness, barnyard funk, vinegar notes and quite a bit of fruitiness. Sourish flavor with a bit of sweetness, malt, barnyard, oak, fruits and a dry finish. Medium-bodied. Not as good as most Cantillons, but still pretty great.

On tap @ Nøgne Ø/Zwanze day. Unclear orange body with a medium sized off-white head. Aroma is funky but not particular strong, quite pleasant nonetheless. The aroma indicates that this might be both sweet and acidic. The flavor meets the expectations from the aroma. It sweet malty with brown sugar and acidic dry fruity at the same time. Nice body with a pleasant funky aftertaste. Could be a bit difficult to evaluate this beer. It’s not a triple and not a geuze, it actually tastes like a blend of a sweet beer with some lambic. Not the most exiting version of this kind of blends either and nothing extreme in any direction either. But Cantillon have to get some credit for doing for trying to recreate the original historic trappist beer. Now one will ever know if this is correct but I endorse the attempt.

Craft Clerkenwell. Tuesday Horal Chugging Tasting, hand bottle (big thanks to Leighton), 17/09/13. Hazed golden amber with a good sized frothy off white head. Nose is tangy fruit, tarte orange, light smoke, grassy, earthy, farmy, cobwebs. Taste comprises lemon rind, tarte orange, barnyard, lightly acididc, grassy. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation lending towards a dryish finish. Drinkable affair but not as complex as I had hoped for.
