Cantillon Zwanze 2013 is the sixth release in the Zwanze series of beers. This series has been released every year since 2008, and beginning in 2011, with a coordinated celebration around the world at various beer bars, breweries, and restaurants. The 2013 edition is a top-fermented abbey ale closely resembling a Belgian tripel in style, with lambic added.
The yeast was selected in collaboration with the Institut Meurice, a college in Brussels specializing in biotechnology. This means that Zwanze 13 is not a lambic, in spite of the interaction of the spontaneous yeasts at the brewery, and lambic having been blended in. It is however another example of a growing number of ale / lambic blends.

bottle at the brewery, thnx to jean ! pours amber, small white foam lambic-ish smell taste is some grains, but not much . some lambic character as well . peppery sidetaste . realy intresting stuff ! i actualy had it unblended in january and liked it more back than . now jean has blended it with very strong lambic ( 10 % ) to give it a more ’ cantillon-character ’ . its way more intresting and complex now, but not as pure as it was .. still a very nice one though

Craft Clerkenwell. Tuesday Horal Chugging Tasting! Hand bottle (big thanks to Leighton). Hazy amber beer with a small white head. Light palate, semi dry. Little fine carbonation. Light geuzey wet wood. Little floralness. Light juicy orange - grapefruit marmalade. Light dry finish with a marmalade aftertaste. Good stuff, goes down easy!

Draft @ ML. Note de feuilles vertes séchées voire surannées.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 14 Sep 2013) Copper colour with brief, dense, off-white head. Fruity, sourish nose with green apples, stable, oak wood and hints of calvados. Fruity, tart taste with notes of stable, green apples, calvados, sweaty horse and a spicy bitterness coming through in the finish. More than medium body, quite dry. The character from the added lambic takes over quite a lot from the triple character. Interesting, and very nice.

Awesome. Super bretta flavour with some grapefruit aroma on finish. Pours cloudy orange with good head and lacing. Sour mouthful with soft carbonation. Grapefruit and bretta mix wonderfully. Some salt in finish as well with a little hay. On draft at Volo for Zwanze Day.

#30 Cantillon. Happy Zwanze day everyone! 25 cl. draft @ Chez Moeder Lambic Fontainas. Darker hazy amber appearance with a big fluffy and tanned head. Nose carries big brett, tangy, floral wild yeast, sticky caramel, sweeter base lambic is apparent combined with candy sugar, wood and sticky orange caramel. Taste is sweet orange peel, peach ice tea, brett, sweet malts, touch herbs, sticky malts, dark wood, horse blanket, finish carries the sweet candy sugar and caramel lambic with some brett. Body has been thinned out a bit by the brett, easy to drink, strong malt feel & oily thick lambic in the body. Touch less carb. Works a bit better colder than warm. Blending lambic with triple is an acceptable BE beer-style and is something which has been going for a long time to my knowledge. No idea why people are complaining about the weird style / concept, what is next being surprised by German’s brewing bock’s? It is a pretty nice beer, bound to get some backlash due to people’s expectations & factors quite irrelevant to the actual beer itself. Hating Zwanze’s seems to be the cool thing know. Which means more Cantillon for me I suppose :)

How: Draught.
Where: Zwanze Day 2012, Akkurat.
Appearance: Hazy orange colour with an off-white head.
Aroma: Sour, orange, stable, regurgitation.
Body: Medium body, good carbonation.
Flavour: Sour, malt, citrus, regurgitation.
Comment: Not sure if I’ve missed something about it, but I can’t see anything good in this beer. A bad combination that ruins two great beers by creating this. Disappointed.

Tap @ De Bierkoning, Zwanze Day. Hazy, amber color. Of white head (not much). Aroma’s: sour, wood, like a real lambic. Additionally some caramel (!) and tea retronasal. Flavor is moderate sour with a hint of malty sweetness. Alcohol feels like 8%, still the body is on the thin side. Finishes dry, slightly bitter.

14/09/2013 Ma che siete venuti a fà (tap). Ambrata leggermente torbida, schiuma bianca abbondante e discretamente persistente.
