Cantillon Zwanze 2013 is the sixth release in the Zwanze series of beers. This series has been released every year since 2008, and beginning in 2011, with a coordinated celebration around the world at various beer bars, breweries, and restaurants. The 2013 edition is a top-fermented abbey ale closely resembling a Belgian tripel in style, with lambic added.
The yeast was selected in collaboration with the Institut Meurice, a college in Brussels specializing in biotechnology. This means that Zwanze 13 is not a lambic, in spite of the interaction of the spontaneous yeasts at the brewery, and lambic having been blended in. It is however another example of a growing number of ale / lambic blends.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours an opaque orange amber with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out some classic Cantillon funk, some dry pitted fruit (peaches especially), oak, and musty notes. Flavour certainly resembles a classic Cantillon concoction, with loads of Cantillon funk, extremely dry peaches, some very dry hops, and a little yeast. Very dry and astringent on the finish. Unlike most of Cantillon's beers, the hops are fairly present, imparting a very dry, bitter body. Hard to judge this against other Cantillons, since it's not a pure lambic - but this is very exquisite. I'm goin against the grain and going to rate this high. The dryness is very enjoyable. Excellent.

Tap at Moeder Lambic Fontainas. Dark orange, with a tall, fine head. Cloudy. Tangy nose, lemon, orange, some bread, a bit of leather and horse blanket, furits. nice blend. flavor is sweet malts at first, fruity, citrus, then the prety strong lambic taste kicks in, citrus, funk, leather. Very bitter finish. Nicely fruity, some apricots. Decent, drinkable stuff, though nothing amazing. Maybe a bit too dry?

Draught at Akkurat. Pours reddish Brown with not much of a head. Mild aroma of yeast and oranges. Taste of grape peel, a bit of vintage gueze like tartness, cellar notes. Same judgement as a lot of others, stick to what you know for 2014...

Keg at the Earl of Essex in London. Pours lightly cloudy gold with a fine, foamy head. The nose has grass, dry berries, mellow tang. Light sweet flavor with decent grassy bitterness, some dried fruits, grapes, mild bread, some tang. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Big grassy bitter finish, light sweet dried fruits, leather, old wood, some leaves, restrained funk. Definitely has the trademark Cantillon grassiness but the funk is certainly scaled back. Not bad overall.

On tap at Mikkeller Bar SF for Zwanze Day. Aroma is fairly fruity with quite a bit of plum, some apple cider, moderate pepper phenolics. Light acidity and faint barnyard funk. Some light, herbal mint notes. Light citrus as it warms. A touch soapy. Pours a slightly cloudy copper with some nice ruby highlights. Moderately thick, slightly off white head with fairly good retention that lingers on the edges once it recedes. Moderate lacing and legs. Flavor is fairly sweet upfront with some Candi sugar notes. Mid palate you get some hints of the lambic with some barnyard funk and faint acidity. Finish has lots of pepper notes and more Candi sugar as well as string plum notes and and red apple cider. Fairly herbal finish as well but not minty. Moderate bitterness with strong noble hop character. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Soft, creamy carbonation. Low but present astringency, especially in the finish and medium alcohol warmth. Overall, an interesting beer but not a very enjoyable beer. The lambic works in odd ways with the Trippel and it doesn’t really work. The bitterness is odd as well. The fruit esters and strong herbal phenolic notes clash.
