Cantillon Zwanze 2013 is the sixth release in the Zwanze series of beers. This series has been released every year since 2008, and beginning in 2011, with a coordinated celebration around the world at various beer bars, breweries, and restaurants. The 2013 edition is a top-fermented abbey ale closely resembling a Belgian tripel in style, with lambic added.

The yeast was selected in collaboration with the Institut Meurice, a college in Brussels specializing in biotechnology. This means that Zwanze 13 is not a lambic, in spite of the interaction of the spontaneous yeasts at the brewery, and lambic having been blended in. It is however another example of a growing number of ale / lambic blends.

Draught @ Nøgne Ø, Rygene Pours hazy orange with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, funk, tart and hint of alcohol. Taste is light to medium sweet and light sour with a long dry and sour finish. Body is light to medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.

Tap at Earl of Essex. It pours hazy amber with a small off-white head. The nose is juicy, dough, apricot, nectarine, earth and apricot yoghurt. The taste is crisp, sour peach, yoghurt, grapefruit, apple, pear, mild acidity, vinegar, wood and earth with a dry finish. Medium body with a dry finish. Solid stuff, thankfully not too sweet and the sourness shines through.

(Keg at Pikkulintu, 20130914) The beer poured amber and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had sourness, grapefruit, malts and caramell. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were sourness, grapefruit, malts, caramell and bitterness. Aftertaste was sour and tart. Quite lambic like brew. The strong ale components were mildly in the background. I still prefer lambics.

On tap at Nøgne Ø, Zwanze Day. It pours a hazy golden orange body and a dense, off-white head. Lacings. Funky nose, far from extreme though, with leather, lemon, some barnyard and a little malty touch. The flavor pretty much the same, with a little sugary fruityness. Medium to full body, nice carbonation level. Dry and almost vinegar-ish. Lasting finish. Well, it’s a nice beer, not a tripel, not a geuze. Still nice. But... I don’t know what I should think of it. 130914

14/IX/13 - Zwanzeday! - on tap @ Moeder Lambic Fontainas (Brussels) - BB: n/a (2013-861)Thanks to 77ships for arranging our tickets!

Little cloudy deep orange beer, creamy irregular off-white head, pretty stable, adhesive. Aroma: fruity, some citrus, grapefruit peel , bitter impressions, funky. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: surprisingly bitter start, citric, Moroccan preserved lemons (salty), grapefruit peel, hoppy, sour of course. Aftertaste: more grapefruit, lemon peel, lemony in general, bitter hops, sourish, funky, bit weird, hay, dry lemony ending. Ok beer, but was hoping for more tripel characteristics, like the Vicaris Tripel Gueuze.

Draught @ Pikkulintu, Helsinki on Zwanze Day 2013

Pours dark copper orange with a small head. Aroma of tart berries, some sourness, spices, wood and hints of ripe fruits. Taste is smooth, stingy sourish and spicy with notes of tart berries, some lingonberries, ripe fruits and surprisingly light body considering the ABV. Finish is tart and stingy with notes of berries and spices. Distinct Cantillon sourness noticeable here, but the base beer feels a bit lacking and light bodied. Overall feels slightly off, but still quite interesting and unique.
