Beware, this is a BIG beer. Brimming with luscious roasted coffee and chocolate malt flavours which are balanced by a brisk bitterness and bold freshness from the hops. If you’re feeling politically incorrect try it with your favourite cigar, or a dram of your best single malt whisky. Or, if your tooth is sweeter, why not jump in at the deep end with the most decadent dessert of all; half a bottle in a glass with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on top (beer geeks like us know it as the Imperial Stout Float). Or simply enjoy it on its own as a decadent dessert or night cap - the perfect winter warmer! If you don’t already know the history of Russian Imperial Stouts please check it out on the internet, it’s a good story. But remember, although based on that century-old classic style, this beer is a very modern interpretation, like all our beers!

Bottle. Pours thick with a black body and a tan head. Good retention and lace. Aroma are show a surprisingly big herbal character. Chocolate, cocoa, light hints of dark fruits, medium esters, lots of dark chocolate, raisins, pine, and fudge. No phenols, diacetyl or otherwise. Earthy, biscuity and some pie crusts with the malt profile. Very thick on the palate. Flavors of earth, peppery, a hint astringent from the dark roast. Bitter, chocolate. Bitter balance overall. Malty, woody, coffee, woodsie notes. Some tobacco. Could use a touch more malt sweetness for my palate. Creamy, full bodied, thick and velvety. Medium to light carbonation. Quite warming. Tasty.

Medium dark brown head. Opaque black body. Roasty coffeeish aroma with wooden laquer and burnt notes. Dry-sweet roasty resiny burnt taste with honey, alcohol, and lacquer notes. Fullish body. Mild, mealy mouthfeel with slight heat. Dry resiny burnt coffee aftertaste with sooty lacquer and alcohol notes. Excellent! Balanced and drinkable, and full of flavour. (0.5l bottle, Fish & Beer, Copenhagen.)

Bottle. Viscous pour. Black with a coat of tan head that soon disappears. Modest but intense aroma with burnt malt, coffee, caramel, blackcurrants, alcohol. Oily texture. Sweet and full of chocolate and coffee with roasted flavours supporting. Some dark fruit, some astringency. Bitterness doesn’t quite overcome the thick sweet flavours but it’s there. Nice carbonation level helps make it very drinkable. It’s a big, rich and perfectly sound stout that just didn’t seem to have anything much to say. [7 2 7 3 14] Bottle. Black with a good inch of tan head that lasts pretty well. Aroma of singed malt, mocha, molasses - smells both a bit burnt and sweet. Oily but not a lot of body for 10%. Mocha and somewhat syrupy sweetness, decently bitter and slightly astringent finish. No real bottom end. Burnt flavours only somewhat masked by sweetness and bitterness. Expected to want to disown my previous rating but this one is for others.

Bottle at Jan & Charlottes tasting, Ulfborg, Denmark 09.04.11 cheers Jan & Charlotte This has a very nice aroma, roasty a little dark sugar and a touch of liqourice and even a little soured cream. Pours black with a beige head. Wonderfully roasty in the mouth, there is a little warmth from the alcohol, touch milky. Cappucino in the mouth, creamy but while the roastiness lasts for a long while there are some late hops coming to join the fray. A8 A5 T9 P4 Ov16 4.2
