This Baltic Porter is brewed with malts from Red Shed Malting in Alberta and noble hops. The dark lager characteristics allow a rich, velvety smoothness to blast through to the finish.

The Kiek in de Kök cannon tower is a historical remnant of the 15th century, located in Tallinn, Estonia. “Kiek in de Kök” means “peak into the kitchen” in Low German. This is the eighth beer in our It's Not Magic, It's Science Series. This was made in partnership with Red Shed Malting.

473ml can. Pours a clear red-brown with a medium, creamy, short lived, beige head that laces. Aroma of roasted malt, raisin, earth and dark chocolate. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, caramel, dark chocolate, raisin, date and a hint of licorice in a dry, mild bitter finish. Medium body with a creamy, smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. Tasty and enjoyable.

650mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out cocoa, light coffee and a touch of vanilla. Flavour is well-balanced, bringing out notes of roasted malt upfront, followed by cocoa, a touch of vanilla, and dark fruits. Low-to-moderate sweetness for the style. Full-bodied, with a great balance between roast and sweetness. Very good stuff - my kind of robust porter.

Dark brown and a bit murky. Mild chocolate character on the nose, with indistinct and not particularly appetizing fruitiness. Sweetish, chocolatey character, with a burnt malt and stewed fruit character that is more intense and enjoyable than was on the nose.

650 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown with moderate head. Aromas of grass, biscuit, and brown sugar. Favors of roasted malts, toast, sweet dark fruit and a little licorice/spice. Pretty much like a Doppelbock. Tasty.

Draught at Tap & Barrel, Coal Harbour, Vancouver
Dark brown color, near black, with red shades; creamy beige head. Mild aroma of dark caramel. Good body strength, round mouthfeel; dark caramel flavor, moderately sweet, with a fruity and nutty edge; correct bitterness level; in the final there is some rye bread and roasted nuts.
The roastiness from the nuts is just a bit too much for my preference, but overall it’s a good offer, rich, bold.
