ALL PROCEEDS FROM THIS BEER WENT TO THE DEXTER RELIEF FUND
March 15th, 2012 a tornado tore through Dexter, missing the brewery, but not all of our neighbors. What could we do to help? Hmmm. We do know how to make beer. So make a beer is what we did. This beer. Teaming up with co-conspiritors, Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company, Schera's Algerian Restaurant, and The Abu Nawas Beverage Company, to create a a collaborative beer like none other.
A dark smokey sour saison full of rich aromatic coffee and the spicy heat of a secret Algerian spice blend.
Cheers & Mahalo plenty!

Notes from October 2013 Bottle from some creepy cat lady in Iowa. Had this a couple times, but never got to sit down with it. Batch 1068/1069. Fluted tulip. Half inch of lingering fluffy lather. Black with brown highlights. Tangy, lightly roasted, black patent-ish, confused smell. I guess this is what they were going for. Minerally & twangy upfront, then comes the bitter roasted coffee. That sticks around for a bit longer then I'd like. Something else hides in your throat, something unspecific-ly fruity. Big, harsh carbonation. Mellow abv. Frothy, but thin. Might have been a touch fruitier completely fresh out the gate. Second half of the bottle sloshed nicely though.

750mL bottle, pours a dark mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma brings out smoke, spiciness, leather, and oak. Flavour is unusual, with lots of leather, smoke, and spices upfront. Extremely odd notes, but it all works together somehow. Very nice one.

Bottle - Peppery, spice and perfumy. Deep clear brown with a light beige head. Spicy, peppery, grassy and a tart dry finish. Complex and odd.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 4/24/2012. Pours fairly crystal clear nearly opaque very dark brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark roasted coffee, cocoa, chocolate, toast, lemon zest, green apple, tart cherry, pepper, clove, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, oak, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Fantastic aromas with awesome complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, coffee, spices, and fruity/funky yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of dark roasted coffee, cocoa, chocolate, toast, lemon zest, green apple, tart cherry, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, oak, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Fair amount of fruity tartness and roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of coffee, cocoa, chocolate, lemon zest, green apple, tart cherry, hay, straw, grass, musty funk, oak, light leather, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Outstanding complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, coffee, spices, and fruity/funky yeast flavors; with a great malt/tartness/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly acidic/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding spiced dark saison style! All around awesome complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, coffee, spices, and fruity/funk yeast flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle, Batch 1068/1069, bottled 25 April 2012. Deep hazy red-orange-brown body, thick puffy, dirty light brown head. Spicy, tart nose, some leather; chocolate and toast as well as dust and tannins; rather delicate balance of sweet and spice. Beginning of the sip is toasty with acidic coffee beans, followed by a thin sourness with spice and tannic oak barrel. Hints of alcohol. Finishes with ashy coffee and oak. Sour, thin, and spicy, good but not great.

Bottle. Poured a dark brown, with some fizzy notes, small bubbly white head. Aroma notes of coffee and roasted malts, some minor funk. Flavor was coffee notes, some malts, and some sour, tart notes. Pretty enjoyable. Plenty of carbonation despite it being open for about 8 hours by the time I got to it.

Bottle @ Ratman’s house. Thanks Bill! Dark reddish black appearance with a tan head. Spicy, insect/buggy, a bit tangy, light fruity aroma. Slightly burnt, juicy fruity, chewy herbal, bug, weird coffee flavor. Bleh.
