Bourbon barrel aged 'impy' from this English craft brewer, sampled at BCBF. Thick, creamy, pale yellowish beige head quickly opening in the middle, over a jet black beer. Aroma of chocolate sauce, hazelnut oil, vanilla-like bourbon very present, candied dates, wet leather, brown sugar, dried fig, wet wood, rum. Sweet onset, candied cherries, figs, sourish elderberry note, soft carbo, thick and resiny, oily mouthfeel. Alcohol is very pronounced and 'palpable' at an early stage; develops further into a heating, very boozy finish, heavily bourbon-flavoured, with some of the wood thrown in and chocolatey, nutty, bittersweet maltiness lingering. A bit too bourbon-forward for me personally, could do with a bit more subtlety and restraint, I think.
