After an exciting season that saw the Starks reclaim the North and Cersei take the Iron Throne as the first queen of Westeros, Brewery Ommegang and HBO Global Licensing are introducing a new beer and bringing back a previous brew to steady the nerves of fans as they anxiously endure the show’s off-season break. Valar Dohaeris Tripel Ale is the latest beer in the series and pays homage to Arya’s season-long struggles within and around the House of Black and White.

Valar Dohaeris Tripel Ale is, much like a “faceless man,” not what it first appears to be; it shares the complexity of its sister-brew, Valar Morghulis Dubbel, and a strength masked and belied by its lighter color.

Valar Dohaeris pours a beautiful copper-tinted hue with a full, fluffy white head. Sweet grain and honey are prevalent in the aroma. The flavor opens with a bright sweetness thanks to the Belgian candi sugar used in brewing. The finish is moderately dry and effervescent with just a hint of Belgian yeast character.

Malt: Pils, Wheat, Oats, Flaked Barley
Hops: Noble Varieties

Pairs with rich pasta dishes like fettuccine alfredo and penne alla vodka. Complements roasted and cured meats nicely as well as moderately sharp cheeses. A perfect accompaniment for charcuterie.

Bottle from the lcbo. Slightly hazy yellow pour, with a huge white head. Very yeasty, and fruit Aroma. Lots of pineapple and tropical fruit. Slightly boozy, sharp cereals. Finish is medium bitter, sweet, with light candi sugar notes.

Bottle pour from Harvest Market, Bedford (R.I.P.). Appearance is hazy light orange with tons of sparkle, fine floaties that give it a bit of a snow globe feel, finger-width off-white foamy head with decent retention and light leggy lacing. Aroma is moderately strong sweet fruit, hint of tart fruit and banana, and Belgian yeast. Taste is strong wheat, sweet candied fruit, Belgian yeast, late hint of bubblegum. Mouthfeel is light-to-medium bodied with smooth, almost slippery texture, lively-to-fizzy carbonation that dominates the early experience and fairly dry finish as taste with yeast. Overall, more interesting taste than aroma though both represent the style well. Well done though need to let it sit a bit for the carbonation to mellow.

Another pick-up by my son, Total Wine in Houston. Thanks Bri, you know I like my tripels. Ommegang is a top flight brewery, great with the Belgian styles imho. I have the cage and cork off the 750 ml bottle and pour now into my Straffe Hendrik snifter. The delivery is an opaque, yellow-orange-gold with persistent snow-white head. Attractive nose, fruity, yeasty and a promise of sweetness. And the taste, wow, like really nice. Apricot, yeast, cut hay, peach, grain and some spiciness, maybe nutmeg. I’m going to take my time enjoying this one.

Score: 8 / 3 / 8 / 4 / 15 -- 750 ml corked and caged bottle, vintage 2016.
Dark golden, medium hazy body, with quite a lot of floaties and a big, frothy, light yellow head.
Aroma of overripe red apples, dried fruits, brown sugar, toffee, dark honey, bread, some ripe banana, some spices.
Tastes quite similar, with more smooth, sweet notes, slight alcohol.
Medium, a bit oily mouthfeel, with an average carbonation.
Finishes warm, quite astringent, medium sweet, slightly spicy, yeasty, fruity again, with ripe fruits, brown sugar, apples, lingering honey.

Very nice. Tastes very Belgian, with diverse notes of ripe fruits, brown sugar and some yeast. A bit heavy to drink, especially towards the finish, while still elegant and balanced. Among the better style examples I've had, with the only flaw of too much yeast sediment floating around.

Sampled from a bottle this beer poured a bright copper color with lots of chunks and a large fluffy orange-white head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was sweet, yeasty and musty with a bit of band aid. The flavor was bitter and yeasty with band aid, phenol, sugar, mustiness and booziness. Medium length finish. Moderately full body. Decent but disappointing.

Golden with amber overtones, sheet of white head with lacing. Bread nose of yeast and citrus zest. Taste of mild bready malt, yeast, a blunt, spicy zest, mild orange. Good Belgian-style beer, not mind blowing but worthy of a taste.
