Hell's Half Mile is a German style Helles Lager that is pale gold with a creamy white head. Helles is German for bright. Hell's Half Mile has an appealing grainy aroma with a slightly sweet malty flavor yet perfectly balanced with traditional noble hop characteristics. Don't let the light color fool you! This full bodied beer is complex and refreshing!

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy medium golden yellow color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of cracker, lightly toasted biscuit, light honey, herbal, floral, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of pale malt and earthy hop notes; with solid strength. A bit fruity/yeasty in the aromas, but not overwhelming. Taste of cracker, lightly toasted biscuit, light honey, herbal, light pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/grassy/spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of cracker, lightly toasted biscuit, light honey, herbal, pepper, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of pale malt and earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from lingering bitterness, increasing through the glass. Very clean on lager flavors, with minimal yeast notes present. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, fairly crisp, and lightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6%. Overall this is a very nice Helles. All around nice robustness and balance of pale malt and earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

On tap at the Mackinac Island Draught House. Pours a clear gold with a near white head that dissipates to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma is mild with notes of hay, bread and a bit of biscuit. Flavor is mild with hay and grain and a bit of grass in the finish.

Hazy gold with a short, off-white head. Light fruit, sour grain malt aroma. Taste is rather tart fruit, apple, slightly acidic. Very crisp and carbonated, increasing tart/sour. Not bad.

12 oz bottle. Pours just a touch on the pale side of golden, lightly hazy, with a white head. Honey biscuit aroma. Flavor is also pretty biscuity with honey, slightly toasty, with caramel hints. Simple, but tasty.

Bottle. Hazy straw body, medium dissipating off-white head. Cerealy nose with grassy hops, light metallic notes, a touch of lemon, and perhaps adjuncts. Body dominated by bitter, grassy hops, sharp grain, toast, a hint of lemon, and light metallic notes. Not my favorite beer, but there are no fatal flaws.

Hazy golden honey coloured body with a pungent glow and a very nice frothy off-white head with larger bubbles - great looking, for sure. Aroma of fresh pale malt, lemons, coriander seed and a bunch of cardboard - not much else. Light-bodied; Sharp lemon and acidic flavour up front with a mild sweetness, a ton of sour lemon juice taste and some very mild tastes. Aftertaste shows the odd combination of lemons and light malt with very little else. Overall, an interesting beer - not horrible, but not showing the best characteristics of the style - light and citrusey for sure. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 30-July-2010 sampled at home in Washington on 14-April-2011.
