A Belgian Quad aged in red wine barrels for 6 months. Sugarman is a velvety smooth barrel-aged strong Belgian Quad-style ale. Darkly inviting in colour, with a silky tan head, this beer exudes the oaky richness of its intoxicatingly beautiful plump, black cherry mocha nose. It has a complex, full-bodied, spiced dark rum flavour that thrills your palate with its ripe voluptuousness and finishes with an exciting yet serene complexity.

Bottle shared at level 42, picked up in Cape Town. It pours cloudy deep mahogany brown with a medium beige head. The aroma is soft, sweet, estery, candy, pear, sugared plums, wood and some booze. The taste is slick, sweet, sweet fruits, tangy date, sugared plum, raisin, wood, vanilla, leather, touch of nail varnish and some warming alcohol. Pretty sweet and rich on the finish. Medium + body and average carbonation. Balance is not quite there, but there are good elements to it.

Bottle split at L42, thanks to Paulo, 23/01/17. Mahogany brown with a decent light tan cap. Nose is wood, toffee, fruit cake mix, light spice. Taste comprises treacle toffee, dates, figs, spice, dark malts, light wooded tones, toasted brown sugar. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a light warming boost. Decent enough easy drinking Belgian strong but perhaps fails to deliver a little on its hefty ABV.

Level 42 Bottleshare. Thanks to Paul. Light haze on this deep amber beer, small cream colour head. Palate is smooth and semi dry, modest carbonation. Soft dry malts, sweetish cream and caramel. Modest fruits and mellow rum. Some mild alcohol warmth. Touch of vanilla. Light dry spicy finish. Some decent components but the whole doesnβt sing for me.

Light sweet flavour with some jammy dark berries, toffee, alcohol, burnt marshmallows. Full bodied, oily, with fine to average carbonation. Warming finish with more toasted toffee, light ash, brown bread, ripe berries. Not bad overall.
