Harpoon Old Ale is inspired by the sustaining winter offerings of many English breweries. This complex & malty brew is marked by significant alcohol warmth, balanced bitterness, biscuit/roasted undertones, and sublime mouthfeel. Proper English yeast, traditional hop varietals, and generous malt bill create a wonderful companion for the fireside. Enjoyable for consumption now or for extended cellaring.

Review from notes, sampled 12/9/2007 Picked up a 6 pack of the encore series. Pours a deep amber with a fluffy head that dissappears as soon as you look away from the glass. Smell is of spicey floral hops and a bit of caramel and maybe a little diacetyl. Taste is lightly malty with a bit of an alcohol taste. Mouthfeel is thin carbonation is low. This is not a bad beer, but I was expecting it to be a little maltier maybe a little thicker and sweeter.

Bottle at Brickseller, Washington
Amber color. It has a some malt and caramel aroma and stronger flavor; correct (to strong) bitterness. As usual, beers from Harpoon are not exciting.

12oz bottle, encore edition. Deep but semi-transparent orange-brown color. Malty deep aroma with a hint of alcohol. Full, sweet, and rich. Almost comes off bock like to me, but certainly retains some of the classic Old Ale attributes as well. A perfectly balanced beer, well done.

From the 12oz bottle a transparent copper brown with a lasting, creamy white head. Smells biscuity with hoppy backing. Flavor is malty with spicy touches that barleywines usually have. Fairly smooth finish with a touch of heat. Nothing sublime but another drinkable beer from what’s become an adventurous and notable series from Harpoon.

Bomber drunk on 6/22/07
Dark chestnut with burgundy and dark beige tints. Clear, filtered with a dark beige head that is initially large, fading to half a finger, leaving no lace.
Some bittersweet coffee, anise, prunes perk up the nose, slowly smoothing out in to a breadiness and sweet caramel maltiness. Vanilla and caramel dominate from there, until it finally dries out on the finish through light alcohol and coffee. Medium strength of aroma, no flaws at least, but the complexity is stretched pretty thin across a simple caramel maltiness.
Even less complex in flavor, with tons of caramel sweetness, rather simple and tacky, obviously suffering from the filtration. Too much hardness grows on the palate, as well as breadiness and a light nuttiness that isnt really goin anywhere. Ends on a coffeecake and prune note, with light alcohol warmth giving a light liqueur-like note. Too sweet. Carbonation is low, texture is sugary but hard, not supple and malty. Neither my friend nor I finished our glass.

Bottle. Nice fruity malt aroma - orange and raisin. Bright amber color with moderate head and nice lacing. Very syrupy sweet caramel and butter flavor from start to finish - moderate hops finish. Malty aftertaste. Nice beer but wish it it had a less sweet and more malty flavor.

Pours deep amber into a snifter. Head quickly subsides to skim rim with no lacing. Sweet molasses and alcohol aromas. Sweet with slightly bitter hop and roasted malt finish. Becomes a bit cloying over the course of the bomber.
