This is the fourth beer of the Midnight Anthracite series. Four barrels: two peated whisky, one rum, one bourbon...a long and silly history. Crystalline Anomaly takes Cacaophony's base beer, and ages it in the oak for 10 months. This embued the liquid with a delightfully complex and smooth smoked character. Once extracted, we conditioned it on fresh seville oranges and cacao nibs to enrich the brew with deep and rich orange and chocolate flavours.

Glossy black, creamy brown head. Smells strong.. smokey, lightly tart, oaky, some citrus. Smooth body, not too thick. Taste is.. nasty at first, I'm sorry to say. Very heavy peat clashes with orange in nuclear war. First sip is worse, gets less bad.

Crowler. Black pour. Aroma of chocolate, orange, booze, licorice, smoke, roasted malt and rum. Taste has nice rum booze, chocolate, juicy orange, roasted malt, licorice, smoke, peach, sweet vanilla and burned caramel. The rum is more present than the bourbon, but that works well with the orange that gives it a black ipa character. Interesting and tasty beer.

Pours nearly black-brown. Small -if any - tanned head. Smell is whiskey, mild peat like. Taste is full, bit bitter, peat, oranges are very mild. Some intense dark chocolate. Not my thing, but I do like it more than I thought I would.

Draught Small dark greige had over black beer with red highlights. Roasted nose, dry (Islay) whisky with a nice smell of black olives. There is chocolate, but you have to search. Sweet-ish roast with smoked whiskymalt flavour. Bit walnut bitter in the finish. Very faint coffee notes, chocolate even fainter (?). Well bodied, slick, good carbonation, bit chewy. Definitely not a bad stout.
