This sour dry hopped fruited ale is a blend of two beers we brewed with our friend Tom, from Big Island Brewhaus. We blended 25% of Best Lei’d with 75% of Plans and ended up with what we are calling, Best Lei’d Plans. Combining the cherry and grapefruit elements of one beer with the dry hopping regimen of the other. Leaving you with a tantalizing hop bouquet. Erupting with flavors of sweet lemony citrus, juicy grapefruit, Jolly Pumpkin funk, and hints of cherry skin.

Later, Laurie and I are on island again. We’ll pour beer over on Maui for the Maui Brewers Fest, but also, finally, we brew with Tom and his team! I drive up the night before for a beer, to go over details, and finalize the recipe… and Tom tells me.

“Oh, about that. The container didn’t arrive. (All of the malts and hops we planned on using.) But we have the fruit!!!”

So, we improvised, as all good brewers do… And of course, borrowed a name… As all good brewers do...

Back in Dexter, we brewed three versions and blended a fourth. We even gave them the same names. Try to keep up with all that!

Enjoy!

Cheers & Mahalo plenty!

(Draught at BrewDog Shepherd's Bush, London, 24 Nov 2018) Hazy golden colour with frothy, white head. Fruity, slightly sourish nose with citrus, grapefruit, herbs and tart berries. Hoppy, herbal taste with notesof citrus, grass, herbs (hemp, nettles), biscuits and a balanced herbal/citric bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. A bit weird, but quite interesting, with a generous hop profile. Nice one.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/14/2017. Pours lightly hazy medium golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big tart/tangy grapefruit, cherry, fruit skin, lemon, lime, orange, peach, pear, pineapple, passion fruit, red/green apple, mango, melon, berries, white wine, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, pine, oak, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, wheat, cracker, and white bread dough; with lighter notes of leathery/musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/spicy yeast, citrus/earthy hops, fruit, oak barrel, and moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart/tangy grapefruit, cherry, fruit skin, lemon, lime, orange, peach, pear, pineapple, passion fruit, red/green apple, mango, melon, berries, white wine, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, pine, oak, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, wheat, cracker, and white bread dough; with lighter notes of leathery/musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate peppery yeast spiciness; pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grassy bitterness; and light fruit/Brett tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy grapefruit, cherry, fruit skin, lemon, lime, orange, peach, pear, pineapple, passion fruit, red/green apple, mango, melon, berries, white wine, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, pine, oak, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, wheat, cracker, white bread, leathery/musty funk, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy yeast, citrus/earthy hops, fruit, oak barrel, and moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and minimal hop/fruit astringency after the finish. Moderate increasing dryness from bitter/spiciness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky/tannic, fairly crisp, and lightly acidic/tangy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 6.9%. Overall this is an excellent fruited wild saison. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy yeast, citrus/earthy hops, fruit, oak barrel, and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink with the moderately bitter/spicy/tannic/drying finish. Amarillo, Cascade, Citra, Hallertau Blanc, & Centennial hops. Great balance of juicy/dank/earthy hops/fruit, with classic JP house funky Brett/Saison yeast complexity; nice oak presence and wheat/oat/pale malt backbone. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example as expected.
