Looking for a sweeter, less hoppy beer? Vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa nibs and chili peppers and sweet complexity to this brew, with a grist of two row, black prinz, dark Munich and chocolate malts. Nugget, Willamette and Brewer’s Gold add flavor and aroma with little to no bitterness. It was aged for three months in bourbon barrel for an added kick of sweet vanilla flavor.

Sampled on draft this beer poured a black color with a small foamy tan head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was sweet dough and dry spices. The flavor was dry spices, faint hot pepper, toasty malts and vanilla. Medium length finish. Moderately full bodied and smooth.

On tap at Belmont Station, Portland, Oregon. Has a pitch black colour and a beige head. Aroma of chili, roasted malt, dark chocolate and coffee. The flavour is more roasted and a little sweet with jalapenos, chocolate truffles, coffee and vanilla. Has a soft and silky mouth feel, full-bodied and a medium bitterness. Sweet and roasted with a nice chili burn in the end.

12 oz. bottle purchased at Beertopia, Omaha, NE. Bottled 3-20-17. Aroma is cinnamon, mild chili, light oak. The flavor is pretty nice. Mild roasted malt backbone with vanilla, cinnamon, and a mild lingering chili pepper in the finish. Not overly spicy / hot. Has a trace of cinnamon. Very light nuance of oak (not so much in the way of bourbon) Mouthfeel is a tad lean yet the sum of all the parts equals a nice stout.

12 oz bottle. Pours black with a light tan head. Bourbon and milk chocolate aroma, spicy spices like chilies or cinnamon. Milk chocolate flavor with, again, some cinnamon, and some bourbon tones. The milk chocolate is very prominent, almost like cocoa powder. After all, it is quite tasty. Despite its sweetness, it’s not overwhelming. Excellent.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 3/20/2017. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, vanilla, toffee, cinnamon, chili pepper, bourbon, toasted oak, and dark bread; with lighter notes of coconut, coffee, smoke, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa/spices, and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, vanilla, toffee, cinnamon, chili pepper, bourbon, toasted oak, and dark bread; with lighter notes of coconut, coffee, smoke, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Light roast bitterness and bourbon/oak/pepper spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, vanilla, toffee, cinnamon, chili pepper, bourbon, toasted oak, dark bread, light coconut/coffee, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa/spices, and bourbon barrel flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet and bourbon/oak/pepper spiciness balance. Zero cloying flavors after the finish. Slight dryness from bitter/spiciness, lightly increasing through the glass. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and slightly silky/sticky/chalky/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden; a light warmth with zero barrel booziness lingering after the finish. Very minimal pepper heat builds through the glass. Overall this is an awesome BBA spiced imperial stout. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa/spices, and bourbon barrel flavors; super smooth and easy to sip on for the big ABV. Great well rounded complexity and spice presence. Pretty much perfectly balanced flavors; never overwhelming on spice with minimal heat. Great barrel presence with zero booze. A really enjoyable offering.

On tap at OBF 2016, is this a new beer? Anyway, pours a jet black color with a small beige head. A huge spicy nose with vanilla and barrel. Bourbon, vanilla, peppers, cinnamon, spicy all through. But it isn’t overwhelming. Very damn good.
