A decadently dark ale with the rich velvety chocolate notes reminiscent of the popular dessert.

Keg at brewdog Edinburgh. Pours deep ruby, nose is basically cake - vanilla, chocolate, caramel, taste is sweet toffee, caramel, creamy, vanilla, roasted. A little sickly.

Keg at BD Castlegate. It pours deep ruby with a small white head. The aroma is massive red velvet cake upfront and throughout, sponge cake, chocolate and buttercream. The taste is dry, bitter, earthy roast, jammy red berry, very cakey, loads of red velvet cake, victoria sponge and buttercream with a dry, sweetish finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. They did exactly what the set out to do. This is an uncanny beer version of Red Velvet Cake. Wow.

Smells like my childhood birthday parities with tons of sweet icing sugar in the nose. Very malty, icing sugar, red birthday cake, unique but not sure if I would drink more than a sample of it, like i am having.

Rich brown coloured body with a nice, smooth two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of pure chocolate, root beer, sassafras and molasses - very sweet and very nice - not like beer at all. Medium-bodied; Strong malty flavour at first with a very sweet finish showing chocolate and root beer along with some subtle wintergreen and molasses flavours and a touch of earth. Aftertaste shows a smooth malty flavour with some sweetness, grain and a touch of metal and a bit of alcohol, but very sweet and less beer-y and more dessert-y. Overall, a nice and rich beer with plenty of ’red velvet’ flavours with chocolate and root beer the strongest. I sampled this sixteen ounce can purchased yesterday at Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 10-December-2016 for US$2,19 sampled at home in Dearborn, Michigan on 11-December-2016.

16 ounce can into pint glass, best before 4/24/2017. Pours crystal clear reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings cings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of huge milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, vanilla frosting, toffee, brown sugar, cream, bready cake, and toasted earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great complexity and balance of dark/bready malt and lactose/cocoa notes; with great strength. Taste of huge milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, vanilla frosting, toffee, brown sugar, cream, bready cake, and toasted earthiness. Light herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, vanilla frosting, toffee, brown sugar, cream, bready cake, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt and lactose/cocoa flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, and lightly silky mouthfeel that is awesome. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.8%. Overall this is an incredible dessert brown ale! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt and lactose/cocoa flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. Very sweet but not cloying. This smells and tastes exactly like frosted cake all the way through, which really amazed me. A highly enjoyable offering.
