Spicted Sour Ale with Brett (Smokestack Series)

Never content with brewing "to style," our brewing team's approach to Funkier Pumpkin is far from your standard take on pumpkin spice beers. Choosing to focus on the complexity that brettanomyces can bring to a beer, Funkier Pumpkin offers subtle pumpkin flavor accented by traditional spicing in a beer that showcases the hallmark earthy/forest floor notes of our house wild yeast strain.

At Örebro Öl & Whisky 2016. Golden with a white head. Aroma and taste of funk, cinnamon, nutmeg, some fruit and light hay. The body was medium and the finish a bit sour.

750mL c&c poured into a neighbors shaker glass when I brought this to their house for Halloween. After the regular funky pumpkin and a general disappointment in pumpkin beers I had low expectations. But I really enjoyed this beer. A soft funk with light herbalness and just a little bit of pumpkin spice No sweetness or strong artificial flavors. A nice soft and biscuity base to the beer. I may actually try to buy this again. A thick glowing amber orange color with low clarity and a good deal of sediment by the end of the bottle.

Nice crisp and hazy bronze and amber coloured body with a two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of squash, sour grapes, brett, funk, yeast, bread, light spices of allspice and coriander seed and quite a bit of light fruit and sweet notes as well. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong sour notes up front with the brett really hitting hard, some more mellow squash and malt elements, some sour grapes, a bit of yeast and a lot of funkiness, which is a good thing. Aftertaste has much less squash than a typical pumpkin beer, but the spices are nice, the brett is great and the complexity is amazing. Overall, a very nice rich beer, full of flavour from the yeast strain and a very nice dry finish with the spices hitting, but the sour, funky flavours dominate here. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Costco in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 01-October-2016 for US10,99 sampled fresh on 16-October-2016 for my daughter’s fourth birthday - Happy Birthday Claire!

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 2/24/2016. Pours slightly hazy golden orange color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass; with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, tart lemon, lime, pineapple, green apple, pear, grape, berries, and toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of hay, straw, pepper, leather, funk, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of pumpkin/spices, fruity/funky yeast, and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, tart lemon, lime, pineapple, green apple, pear, grape, berries, and toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of hay, straw, pepper, leather, funk, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Moderate fruity tartness and yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of pumpkin, spices, tart lemon, lime, apple, pear, grape, berries, biscuit, light hay/funk, and yeat/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of pumpkin/spices, fruity/funky yeast, and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/spiciness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from carbonation and tart/spiciness. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp/grainy, and lightly acidic/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.5%. Overall this is an excellent spiced Brett wild ale! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of pumpkin/spices, fruity/funky yeast, and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink for the ABV with the balanced tartness. Not funky enough to overwhelm the spice flavors, but still has great Brett complexity. I would love to revisit this in a year to see the differences. A very enjoyable offering.

Pours hazy gold into a tulip. White head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Pumpkin and cinnamon aromas. Sweet with nutmeg and cinnamon upfront turning tart in the dry oak finish.

Bottle thanks to Brian. He does love his pumpkin beers! Pours hazy orange, small white head, dissipates fairly quickly, some lacing. Aroma does have hints of pumpkin, dust, Brett and some acetone. Flavor is light tart, medium funk, dusty and kind of odd. Not really getting a lot of pumpkin pie spices here. Light body.

750 ml corked and caged bottle purchased at the Boulevard Brewing Tours & Recreation Center in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is a hazed golden orange with a small off white head that fizzles out quick. The aroma is pumpkin spice, cinnamon, clove and a soft citrus funk. The taste is leather funk mixed in with the clove cinnamon pumpkin spice of the nose, and finishing with dry and earthy Brett. Bit of the lemon citrus is present in the aftertaste. Quite a bit going on, though nicely integrated. The palate is medium bodied with soft carbonation and the dry spice leather funk Brett finish. Fun one.
