Deacon Blues is a hazy yellow Extra Pale Ale brewed with bold American hops, but fermented with a Belgian yeast strain. Diverse aromas of pronounced citrus fruit with subtle layers of spiciness, are the first indication of the array of flavors stemming from this light bodied ale. Snappy lemon qualities, along with a fresh ginger-like liveliness, flow appropriately into a grassy bitterness that’s moderately intense, but certainly not overwhelming.

Ever so slightly hazy amber and copper coloured body with a relatively large, four centimetre tall light tan head. Aroma of malts, some specialty grains, a dose of bread and yeast and a hint of sugars on the finish. Light-bodied; Very grassy flavour at first with a fresh floral hoppiness, some mellow grain and earthy flavours and finishing with a hint of sweetness and a big resinous flavour at the end. Aftertaste shows some bitterness from grass and hay along with more of a yeastie finish than you’d expect with some light sweetness and a very easy-drinking finish without much malt at all. Overall, a nice and easy to drink beer with some good flavours, a funky yeast and hop presence which turn out nice and not-typical, but an all around good (but not great) offering. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Sicilano’s in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 11-September-2015 for US$1,69 sampled at home in Washington on 13-July-2017.

Reviewed from notes.
Thanks Mike.
The appearance was a golden hazy semi-orange burnt color with a small film of a little white head. Held for a little bit and fell off at a decent pace. Light lace.
The aroma had some fruity jam - somewhat like a citrus and apple blend. Light spiciness, subtle dank/onion sweetness.
The flavor blended enthusiastically between the sweet, the dank and the spicy. Then adds in a touch of herbal. Which followed in the aftertaste to hit the finish somewhat nicely.
The feel was just a wee bit under medium bodied with a little bit of carbonation hitting just a touch more than expected. ABV felt good and crushable. Almost was a little bit spritzy along my tongue, but held it’s ground in keeping to a \"beer\" sort of feel.
Overall, Belgian pale ale and was pretty good. Thanks Mike.

Bottle. Pours a hazy light yellowish gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma combines Belgian yeast with bitter citrus and a light sweet grain backbone. Flavor has a bitter citrus with a grapefruit presence and a bit of Belgian yeast and sweet grains backing.

Bottle. Hazy light golden body with a white, frothy head. Aroma of pine, grapefruit, lemon zest. Hint of clove, cracker. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. The Belgian characteristics don’t have much of a chance against the bitter hops. A grapefruit rind infused wit.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 3/23/2015. Pours slightly hazy golden orange color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, mango, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, light banana, bubblegum, pepper, clove, wheat, cracker, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity and balance of citrus/tropical/piney hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and light pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, mango, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, light banana, bubblegum, pepper, clove, wheat, cracker, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Good amount of peppery yeast spiciness and pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, mango, pineapple, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, pine, light banana, bubblegum, pepper, clove, wheat, cracker, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice robustness, complexity, and balance of citrus/tropical/piney hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and light pale malt flavors; with a good malt/yeast/bitterness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a very smooth, fairly crisp, and resinous/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with no warming present after the finish as expected of 4.4%. Overall this is an excellent session Belgian IPA style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/piney hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and light pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

12 oz bottle. Pours a lightly haze pale golden with a bubble white head. Spicy hop aroma followed by yeasty aromas. Light yeasty and pine hop flavor. This is one of those cases where the yeast and the hops clash for me. Okay but not great.
