Fifth Voyage is a refreshing and easy drinking porter meant to be drank in any season. Fresh coconut and chocolate flavors immediately standout, but rich roasted malt quickly takes over for a flavorful finish.

Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a nice, two centimetre tall light brown head that fades relatively fast. Aroma of tons of chocolate, roasted malt, a bit of peat, a lot of coconut flakes and a big dose of licorice at the end as well. Medium-bodied; Assertive coconut flavours at first with a lot of nutty flavours right behind, like peanuts, hazlenuts and even some cashew flavours as well - all with some light chocolate, a bit of grain, peat and some dry grass and hops noticeable as well, right near the end. Aftertaste is pungent and strong with the coconut and peanuts by far the strongest, then showing some chocolate sweetness, a touch of the lightly smoked peat and ending with a good fresh coconut flavour - slightly tropical! Overall, an interesting beer that simply works - a lot of unique flavours, all with a big malt backbone that shows complexity and a nice profile. Worth getting if you can find it and flying back home with it, if you aren’t local! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 16-July-2015 for US$1,99 sampled at home on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on 15-January-2017.

12 oz bottle. Pours black with a light tan head. Roasty cocoa aroma with coconut distinct, then blending in. A bit lighter flavor with roasted milk chocolate and coconut. I’m not generally a big coconut guy, but this is definitely a good use of it.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger fairly dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coconut, caramel, toast, brown bread, and toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and solid complexity of dark/roasted malt and coconut notes; with solid strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, caramel, coconut, toast, brown bread, light herbal, and roasted earthiness. Light earthy/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, caramel, coconut, toast, brown bread, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice flavor robustness with solid complexity of dark/roasted malts and coconut flavors; with a good malt/coconut balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately creamy/bready moutfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a good coconut porter. Not a whole lot of complexity but there is a good amount of coconut presence well balanced with the dark/roasted malts; and it is very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Draft at the brewpub, Big Rapids. Deep opaque brown body with reddish highlights, thin beige head. Roasty nose with coffee bean and coconut as the beer warms. Nice interplay of coconut, roast, and dark chocolate in the body, which is like a bourbon barrel-aged porter minus the bourbon. Soft finish with sweet milky coconut notes. Pleasant.
