A dark, rich Belgian abbey style ale made with Trappist yeast and dark Belgian candy sugar for a more traditional, malty Trappist character.

Bottle from bu11zeye! Pours dark brown with a tannish head. Warm aromas of dark fruits - plums and dates. Full bodied, except the carb left quickly and it thinned rapidly. It’s oddly sour, with darkish fruit and some yeast/spice. A bit oaky? It’s definitely dry. No issue with heat. A different dubbel, but quite nice.

12 ounce bottle into chalice, no bottle dating. Pours very hazy dark reddish brown color with a 1 finger fairly dense cream colored head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of raisin, banana, prune, clove, pepper, molasses, toast, caramel, candi sugar, dark bread, and earthy yeast spiciness. Nice aromas with good complexity and balance of malt, fruity, and spicy ester notes; fairly strong on the spicy and earthiness. Taste of raisin, prune, banana, molasses, toast, caramel, clove, pepper, dark bread, candi sugar, and earthy yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of dark fruit, banana, molasses, toast, clove, pepper, caramel, dark bread, candi sugar, and earthy yeast spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance of malt, dark fruit, and spicy ester flavors; with good complexity and zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly slick, earthy, and fairly crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very good dubbel style. Nice complexity and balance of flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a very thin light brown head. Aroma of raisins, pit fruit, alcohol, prunes, nuts, malt and a touch of chocolate. Medium to Full-bodied; Deep chewy malt flavour with a lot of cereal and grain flavours, some light toffee and chocolate notes and a good prolonged sweetness from pit fruits, raisins and prunes. Aftertaste is a bit complex with some light spices at first, a touch of roasted malt and a good yeasty note with bread and a bitter spice toward the end. Overall, an interesting dubbel - a bit more potent than others (kind of on the way to a quad taste) but showing some good flavours and nice complexity. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Siciliano’s in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 06-November-2010 for US$2.19 sampled at home in Washington on 04-May-2011.

On tap at the Brewpub. Poured a very dark brown with a small grayish head. Aroma was full of grain, caramel, a bit of licorice and some fruity yeast. Dark fruit notes in the flavor as well as grains and caramel.

Bottle. Dark brown body with ruby highlights. Off-white, rapidly receding fizzy head. The aroma is mostly boozy, almost a bourbon like smell. Lesser notes of licorice, sweet malts, clove and raisin. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes with a peppery alocholic bite and moderate sweetness. Medium body with a watery texture and fizzy carbonation. The fusels in this beer overpower any hope of complexity that may be present — and there certainly are indicators that the beer has some more-pleasant qualities. Too bad.

On tap at the brewpub, served in a tulip. Dark red brown with a small head. Muted yeasty and dark fruit aroma. Flavor is similar, with the expected dark fruit and yeasty cloves, but again a little watered down. It was served a bit on the cold side and the flavors came out a bit more as it warmed. Flavor is good, but it’s not strong enough.
