Kind Ale (Short's Harvest Ale) is a beer brewed each fall with fresh, local hops to celebrate a successful growing season.

Kind Ale can be referred to as a “wet hopped” or “fresh hopped” beer, meaning that it was brewed with hops that were, literally, just picked off the vine a few hours before. Seeing as you can only pick hops during their harvesting season, Kind Ale can only be made when the hops are fully matured and ready for use. Until a few years ago, we really didn’t have the capabilities to brew wet hopped ales (aka Harvest Ales), due to the proximity of our brewery to mature hop fields. However, now that there is a small hop growing industry taking place in Northern Michigan, this allows us to receive hops the same day that they were picked, and brew with them to create these symbolic and distinguishably different tasting hoppy beers.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled 9/25/2012. Pours slightly hazy golden amber color with a nice 1-2 finger fairly dense white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, mango, orange zest, peach, herbal, grass, pine, honey, caramel, floral, bread, and light earth. Very nice aromas with good strength and balance. Taste of big grapefruit, pine, mango, orange zest, herbal, floral, grass, honey, caramel, and bread. Good amount of spicy pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, mango, pine, herbal, grass, and earthy spiciness on the finish for a while. Nice balance of hop flavors with a fairly nice balance of malt sweetness. Some moderate cloying bitterness on the finish for a bit. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly creamy, crisp, and very sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice wet hopped IPA. Big hop flavor with good balance; fairly smooth and crisp to drink. Definitely enjoyed this.

12 ounce bottle, opened 10/4/10. Pours a muddy amber with a colossal rocky brown head. Solid particules all over the place. This one is going to take forever to pour. Good head retention, good lacing, and as my friend would say, fascinating bubble structure. Aroma of tropical fruits, pineapple and floral hops. The taste is tropical fruits, mango, citrus and caramel malts. Bitter finish. There is something faintly off, though thankfully the worst symptom is the colossal head. A faint off-taste is present also, but thankfully its mostly covered by the hops. Medium bodied.

12oz bottle pours a hazy, orange amber with a very frothy, creamy, lacing white head. Aroma is nice, noble hops, lemons, lightly floral, slightly herbaceous. Flavor is well balanced, sweet and malty without being overly sweet. Tinge of bitterness from the hops, citrus fruits, light spice, lightly herby. Finish is medium bodied and balanced.

Bottle. Pours a hazy gold with a medium white head that lasts. Aroma has a nice pine hop aroma with a nice grain sweetness. Flavor began sweet from the malts but the hops build for a nice pine finish.

Bottle thanks to Styles. Light copper color with a foamy/creamy white head. Aroma is strongly hoppy - almost earthy/herbal. Medium plus body with foamy carbonation. Flavor is very strong, almost minty, hop over somewhat harshly roasted caramel. Finishes like the hop was fruity. Really good stuff.

Hazy light orange-brown body, thin, clumping off-white head. Soapy, herbal hops nose with pine and biscuit. Peppery, herbal hops body with pine and fall leaves, grassy and zesty, dominating the simple, biscuity malt backbone. Some bubblegum notes and caramels appear as the beer warms. A solid, quaffable IPA.

12 oz bottle. Pours clear golden amber with a white head. Very crisp hoppy aroma, with citrus and spicy hops and touches of biscuit and honey underlying. Flavor is grapefruit hops primarily, with spicy and piney hop flavors backing them up. Nice and fresh flavors. Some tropical fruit hints seem to creep in a little later in the flavor and aroma. Not aggressive. In all, this is quite a tasty wet-hop IPA, much more to my taste than Huma-Lupa.
