Don't let its looks deceive you. Clean and smooth, easy on the hops and easy on the palate; this light bodied ale has a surprising depth of malt flavors with pleasant hints of a smoky molasses.

Reviewed from notes. Consumed June 2013.
The appearance had a jet black body with a one finger foamy off white head that hangs around for a good two minutes before slowly dieing, clingy lacing.
The smell had chocolate malts, roasty, and coffee-like flavoring.
The taste was mainly sweet and roasty through the chocolates and malts, but the coffee flavorings help balance a bit.
The palate was about a light to medium, sessionable, smooth and creamy.
Overall, I do like this beer, but I don’t think its an American Black Ale - too roasty and bitter coffee with chocolate and no hops that makes me think its more of a Porter or perhaps Stout, but I would have this again.

Pours a dark brown-black, with a bit of creamy, white head. Aroma of roasted grain and malt. Flavor was very roasty, with some chocolate and even some licorice for good measure. Good, but could be better.

This beer pours a dark brown color with a medium thin tan head that evaporates quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of grainy malt and slight hops. Light body with a slight vegetal character and flavors of toasted malt and a bit of earthy hops. The finish is short and leaves a overripe fruit aftertaste. Below average overall.

12 ounce can into pint glass, no canning date. Pours crystal clear dark reddish brown color with a fairly dense 1-2 finger light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Some slight spotty lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of roasted malt, chocolate, raisin, toast, biscuit, herbal, and light coffee. Pretty nice and pleasant aromas with decent strength. Taste of roasted malt, toast, caramel, raisin, brady grains, and light chocolate. Pretty dry on the finish; with lingering notes of roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, and toast on the finish for a short bit. Hardly any flavor presence as you drink; but the light flavors that are there are pretty balanced. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly creamy and smooth mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden with pretty much no warming noticed at all after the finish. Overall this is a pretty decent black ale. There isn’t much robustness in flavor; but it is very pleasant and easy to drink.

12 oz can. Pours black with deep red highlights and a light tan head. Mineral aroma with traces of dark fruit or brown sugar. Very light flavor, brown sugar and dark fruit are sensed first, but mostly I get toasted biscuit. Bits of apple flavors. Okay, but pretty light.

can - Pours very dark brown with a one finger light tan head. It smells mainly of roast malt. It tastes of roast malt with some acidity and some off key metallic and rubber band flavors. Fortunately the roast malt is the strongest flavor, but those others really bring down my enjoyment of this light-bodied brew.

12oz can. Deep brown-black with a beige head. Mellow dark malt aroma. Medium bodied. Sweet burnt chocolate notes, and a mild earthy hop balance. There is a smooth maple syrup taste as well. Pretty good stuff.

Can with thanks to coyotehunter. Pours a dark brown with a thin, yet dense tan head. Aromas of nuts, topsoil, roasted malt with a little light chocolate. Flavor is pretty ragged... a bit of a sourness to this pushes the roastiness around a bit. Lots of nuts and a little leather or something along those lines. It’s not awful, but with the way the nose hit me I was hoping for a little more to captivate my interest.
