Clear but almost opaque deep brown colour with a red hue, small frothy tan head, disappears quickly, not that much lacing. Aroma roasted malts, cocoa, hint of liquorice, subdued smokiness. Flavour is roasted and light smoky medium sweet, light bitter. Medium body, oily to creamy texture, average carbonation. Finish is mild bittersweet, smokiness most present in the aftertaste; overall quite a nice schwarz especially because of the subtle smokiness all the way through.

Single bottle from HyVee. Foamy pour, which reveals a solid black stoutish body. Smell is full of roastiness and some smokey peat. Taste brings in a lot more smokiness. In fact, this really should go down as a smoked beer instead of a schwarz. And I think it’s just fine. Some stout roast, a bit of stout sourness, matched by some not-so-subtle smoke. Maybe more from peat that than rauchmalt, but quite enjoyable.

12oz bottle. Unfiltered brown-black body. Standard beige head. Unpleasant dry cocoa aroma, very cheap and oily. There is only so far you can go with cheap malt, and Schell proves this time and again. Clearly brewed with a little intention and knowledge, but the cheap, chalky malt tones really bring it down. Not to say it isn’t true to style; this is certainly the caliber of beer you would expect to find in Eastern Europe for 43cents. Definitely not good, only for the tickers.

Bottled. A red- brown beer with a lazing orangey head. The aroma has notes of straw and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, straw, adn caramel, leading to a dry finish. Thanks yespr for sharing.

Maybe the best American Dark lager ever made. A thick beer, comparable to a stout. Black with thick, lacing foam. Lots of malt with earth and a light smokiness. Rich and full flavored. Good.
