Brewed to Henry Harvey’s Porter recipe of 1859. Pale, crystal and black malts combine with a generous hop grist of Fuggles and Goldings. Full and rounded with roasted malts to the fore. It is conditioned in cask for four weeks before being released from the brewery cellars.

Harvey’s Porter was first in its class and overall runner-up at the 1995 GBBF at Olympia. In 1999 it was chosen as the ‘Ultimate Pizza Beer’ in the Beauty of Hops awards.

Pours black, small tanned head. Smell is medium intense, roasty , pretty blank otherwise. Taste is full, very roasty, burnt, ashy, yet sharp , ashyness rises even more in the aftertaste. Burnt chocolate, higher bitterness than expected ( or prefered ). Decent porter though.

Bottle. Deep dark brown color, almost black. Grapes and roasted malt in the aroma. Coffee, roasted malt and grapes in the flavor. Just a touch of malty sweetness. Very pleasant beer, although a bit thin.

500 ml bottle at the Royal Oak. First new MJ 500 tick of this trip. Pitch black with a talll, bubbly head. Nose is chocolate, light coffee, a bit of soy sauce. Soft and chocolatey flavor, not sweet, minerals, grassy hop, lightly roasted. Very nice, easy drinking, wth huge flavors. The hops are noticeable, the roast not too much, and not too sweet. I would say that this is still a representative British porter.

Cask at Waterloo Tap. Low key malty chocolate aroma. Dark and glossy, a cola tint. Foamy beige head. Initially a light bitter with veg hints. Then into the finish it gains bitterness a dark chocolate. Some underlying creaminess. Medium bodied but verging on watery. Flat carbonation. Long astringent finish. Not great. Thin and the bitterness feels quite raw.

4/4/2018. Bottle at Cobbetts, Dorking. Pours almost black with a small off-white to beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, hop, toffee, liquorice and a hint of coffee. Medium sweetness, moderate roasted bitterness. Moderate body, somewhat thin texture, soft carbonation. Ok but expected better and not one of Harvey's better ones.

Cask at Royal Oak. Creamy thick beige head. Nice classic Porter. Medium bodied. Diacetyl laced caramel finish. Enjoyable, but not that much depth. OK.

500ml bottle. Black-ish chestnut colour with small, thick, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to beige head. Roasty, dark malty aroma with hints of liquorice, cocoa powder, slightly burnt coffee beans, roasted nuts, minimally floral hoppy overtones, a cautious touch of lovage. Taste is roasty dark malty, spicy, minimally metallic, diluted hints of liquorice, hints of lovage, an earthy nuttily touch as well; minimally watery.

Bottle from the brewery in Lewes. Found this porter to be a little too bitter (prefer Harvey’s ales) although it did have some delicious hints of classic porter flavours at the back of the mouth.

(bottle) Clear, slightly ruby brown colour with a beige and medium-sized foamy head. Leafy dark malty aroma with notes of dark chocolate, leather and mocha. Mildly roasty bitter and delicately sweet flavour, light to medium bodied with a soft carbonation. Dry and slightly roasted malty taste with notes of bread crusts, dark chocolate, mocha and hints of licquorice towards the finish with a subtle dried fruity edge. 27.XI.16
