Like a fine port wine. Dark fruits. Figs, oak aged. Rum! Why’s all the rum gone?! Boozy. Makes you feel warm on a damp evening.

A difficult acquisition but a happy one. I'm pleased to have a 750 ml bottle of Straffe Hendrik Heritage 2016 to try since the base quadrupel from De Halve Maan is highly regarded by me. Corked and caged, those come off with some difficulty to release a scent of bright ripe fruit and a hint of alcohol. Out of the cabinet I take down my Straffe Hendrik glass, of course, that was purchased in Bruges a couple of years ago. The delivery is a strongly dark mahogany liquid followed by a thin rim of tan foam. I note a strong carbonation as it sits for a moment. Finally I lift the glass to taste an assault of dark raisins, dates, cane syrup, a bit of oak, some caramel cake and pecans. Epic, it is truly fine. Now to sit back, listen to some Eric Clapton and enjoy the evening.

750ml bottle from Brewers Haven. Birthday gift. Dark brown pour, persistent silky beige head. Aroma features the sugary rum notes on the Belgian strong, raisins, dates. My wife smelled bacon when I popped it open. Taste is sweet, the rum adding a bit of flavor, complimenting the prune/raisin/date flavors and also toning down the Belgian yeast a bit. Very light alcohol presence throughout.

From a 750ml bottle (bottle no. 04008, shared with Butz). Pours a super dark amber with a medium to biggish head. The nose is boozy, rummy, plummy. In the mouth it's complex and dessert like - cherries, berries, plums, and a little toffeee, with mild rum in the background. The mouthfeel is surupy, but strangely, it's a touch over-carbed. All up, a very enjoyable sipper, let down a touch by the carbonation

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to MadMitch. Pours clear copper-brown with a frothy, off-white head. Really nice, rich, smooth, big toffee, ripening dark berries, minimal bitterness. Full bodied, lightly chewy, with active, massaging carbonation. Warming finish, more rich toffee and ripe, semi-dark fruits. Great depth. Delicious.
