Infused with Armagnac Entras 5 ans - Armagnac-Ténarèze, a powerful Armagnac, matured for 5 years in the cellars of Entras. The cellar master Michel Maestrojuan created a perfectly balanced non reduced Armagnac.

We put the Armagnac in a large barrel and add American roasted and toasted oak flakes. After 3 weeks this mixture is ready to be added to the beer in the bright beer tank. This way we obtain a maximum performance of the used liquor strengthened with the taste of the used oak flakes to enrich our beer.

From tap. Pours hazy orange. White head. Aroma is mild yeasty and fruity. Mild spiced. Phenolic. Toasted. Bitter and slight herbal. Lingering toasted malt and phenolic finish.

Pours medium clear blonde, decent white head. Medium-good stability. Smell is sweet, armagnac, but not too boozy. Taste is full, sharp, sweet, aromatic Armagnac. Not boozy though. No woody notes. OK.

21/XI/17 - on tap @ Horeca Expo (Ghent) - BB: n/a (2017-1901) Thanks to the brewers for today's samples and my Ghent beer posse for sharing the glasses and keeping my liver sane. :p

Clear orange beer, big creamy yellowish head, pretty stable, little adhesive. Aroma: spicy, lots of alcohol, something rubbery, chemical, weird? MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: very spicy, rubbery bitterness, fruity notes, quite some banana, soft alcohol, bit sweet, malty. Aftertaste: yeast, bit spicy, honey touch, little bitter, spicy, some alcohol, still something chemical / rubbery, dry finish. I liked last year's edition (Calvados) much better!

Thanks to Kraddel / Beerlover_Ben. Draft glass. Hazy orange, creamy white head. Nose is bland sweet BE esters, soap & white sugar. Taste is big sweet bland soap, oddly devoid of everything including seemingly the Armagnac, all soap, sugar, low esters, plastic. At least I didn’t outright dislike it like the Calvados version.

Pale blond colour with light haze. Aroma and flavour have a fair amount of yeast. There's a background of sweet malt and a little boozy armanac brandy too.

The new (2017) batch of Broeder Jacob's Lazarus, differing from the previous one in that this time, wood chips soaked in armagnac were used to mature in the beer, whereas the first batch used wood chips soaked in calvados. Otherwise the same beer: a classically Belgian (tripel-based) honey beer, recently released in equally limited quantities as the calvados version. At Just Beer in Kortrijk. Medium thick, creamy, irregularly lacing, dense, egg-white head, lightly hazy, deep peach blonde colour with somewhat khaki-like hue. Aroma of a lot of honey (even honey liqueur or mead), canned peaches, banana, chewing gum, white bread, ginger, candied apple, raspberry jam, pineapple candy, cream, some subtle vanilla-ish oak and indeed even an even more subtle whiff of brandy; some vague background DMS as well. Fruity onset, sweet with a lot of residual sugariness and honey flavour, hints of peach, banana and apricot jam, sourish undercurrent, sharp and numbing, very minerally carbonation; the honey factor, very outspoken in this young sample, weighs heavily on a bready, bit caramelly, soft and very 'round' malt body; leafy hop bitterish touch in the end, vague woody tannins (subtle but noticeable enough and quite elegantly matching with the honey character of the basic beer); the honey, again, strongly lingers retronasally but will probably fade with some proper cellaring. A warming booziness finishes things off - from the beer itself, but indeed accentuated by a subtle brandy-like note, though not necessarily recognizable as armagnac. I guess the differences with the calvados version would only be identifiable in a side by side tasting, but the brewer told me that all the calvados Lazarus has been sold out meanwhile so I'll probably never get that chance. In all, a sweet, accessible Belgian honey tripel with a slight, elegant wood-brandy twist to it, nice enough if you are into sweet, boozy Belgians.
