Necessary Evil is an imperial stout aged for 8 months in bourbon barrels. Aromas of sweet bourbon, vanilla and oak from the ageing process combine with rich chocolate, roasted malts and caramel from the base beer. Soft and silky, this full flavoured stout has layers of complexity and flavour unlike any other.

375mL bottle at The Colmore, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is pretty exquisite, with rich bourbon, vanilla, medium roasted malt, and dark chocolate. Flavour is rich and complex, with intense bourbon barrels, vanilla, dark cocoa, and medium to heavy roast. Wonderful bourbon character, with nothing harsh or out of alignment. Damn fine stuff.

On tap at Brew LDN. Black beer thin tan head. Aroma tells you it's an imperial stout. bourbon vanilla chocolate light coffee. entertaining. is it a good imperial stout. Well it has some soy sauce. it doesn't blow my socks off. it's competent. unfortunately this is where Thornbridge are now competent rather than breaking new ground. safe beers even at the bigger end.

Bottle. Nose is sweet bourbon, chocolate, fudge, very faint mint, roast. Taste is dark chocolate, praline, bourbon, boozy heat, leading to roast notes, cherry, hints of marzipan, and a peppery, boozy finish. A good use of bourbon.
