After being brewed and beginning its life as a Mexican Style Lager, F.A.I.L. was transferred into French oak puncheon barrels onto the local yeast and bacteria that our two year old spontaneous beer had left behind. It rested there, patiently waiting for sunshine, for nearly a year before being blended and naturally conditioned in bottle for an additional two months.

It presents a light tartness, a modest Brettanomyces and oak influence, and a grain character representative of its origins, with the will to refresh and party.

Light and tart, a bit sour and funky. A touch of green apple, dry barrel. Clean and very nice.

On tap @ Ghetto Something. Aroma is vinous, woody, leathery, ripe fruity and faint floral. Pours clear golden color with thin creamy white head and average sparkling appearance. Taste starts refreshing citrusy and yeasty, follows by white whine, tannins, bread and slightly medicinal, mouthfeel is smooth, while finish is light bitter. Medium body, slick texture and average carbonation in palate. Liquid citrusy bread...

(On tap @ Birreria Volo, Toronto, Sept 27/19) Limited notes due to post-Witchstock revelry. Crisp and refreshing light to moderately lactic lager with attendent citrus and grape, crackery grainy malt, dry finishing very dry with a little wood. Light to medium body, very refreshing, another reminder that sour lagers can be delicious.

I loved this funky lager. So clean upfront but with a wild nose and finish.

Sampled at Snallygaster 2019. Poured a mostly clear light orange color with a small white head. Aroma was pleasant, and mild crispness. This one also had a touch of funk to it. Very easy to drink. Nice to have had something to cut into the sweet and hop all day.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle. Aroma is that of a lager upfront, but in the background there are fruity and floral esters with lighter phenolics and oak. Lemon, pear, stone fruit, white pepper, grass, and jasmine. Pours a slightly hazy pale, yellow straw color with a large, thick, frothy white head that recedes steadily to a small film that lingers. No lacing or legs. Flavor is slightly sweet with a medium light acidity and moderate grain notes. The funk is much more pronounced in the flavor. Moderate phenolics that accentuate the dry finish and medium light fruity and floral esters. Peppery and herbal with light lemon and pear notes. Mouthfeel is light bodied with medium high carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a decent beer and an interesting view into what happens when a lager is placed into a sour program.

Not a total fail but also not a ton of flavour. Pours golden with good head and lacing. Light, easy drinking. Light sweet tang. Tap at Snally.

Tap @ De Garde Brewery, Tillamook. Pours a misty yellow, patchy white head. Wild, funky, zesty nose. Super crisp, tart funky character, no remaining lager elements, good depth of complexity, soft bretty presence, oak with tart citric leanings. Interesting experiment trying to twist the contortions of a lager profile, but for this to be effective in its purpose, more of the lager elements should remain. Still enjoyable.
