This dark take on a classic is a cold fermented lager made with a blend of dark malts and an infusion of mild and flavourful Ancho chillies. The lager fermentation gives it that clean drinkability that everyone loves in a lager, but with the roasted, chocolate notes you'd expect from a dark malt with a touch of fuitiness and low heat from the chillies.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 30A / 8B). Bottle 33 cl - Batch 000307 (BBF 26/SEPT/2017). AROMA: medium-low roasted aroma with a slight sweet background. APPEARANCE: dark brown color with ruby body against and translucent. medium beige head with medium retention. TASTE: medium-low to low roasted flavor with a faint vegetal-like presence. medium bitterness with a dry, roasted and hot finish. PALATE: medium-light body with moderate carbonation. medium-low hot sensation from ancho peppers. no astringency. OVERALL: a very interesting schwarziber-like lager with a hot twist.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely fawn head. This disappears very quickly. Nose - initially dark chocolate and then liquorice and smoke come to the fore. Taste - roast, smoke, molasses and liquorice. Palate - close to medium bodied with a crunchy roasty middle section that continues through the finish. Overall - wouldn’t have guessed it was a schwarzbier as many of the characteristics are that of a dry stout.

Pours black, OK , rather grey head.Smell is lager yeast, some coffee tones. taste is nice refreshing, backbone of coffee bitterness, but up front there’s more of a lager-typical bitterness. the backbone is a big surprise ( Spoiler alert here) and is spicy, like it contaisn some peppers. really well balanced though ! This is actually really interesting and nothing like what I expected ! That’s a pretty cool surprise ! Obvious bonuspoints in the overall for how truly unique and cool this is as a whole.
