As you know, here at Cantillon we take the utmost care to produce our beer as naturally as possible. Because the Muscat grapes used for the Vigneronne were not organic, we decided to move to an organic producer and to use wine grapes instead of table grapes. After some research, we couldn't find organic Muscat, but we did find organic Viognier grapes.
We love Viognier wine; aromatic and delicate, with nice fruity notes. We're sure that all these qualities will pair well with Lambic. The grapes come from Minervois area in the South of France, cultivated in a more natural way on a clay-limestone soil.
Even though we decided to move from Muscat grapes to Viognier, the name will remain the same. We did decide to change the label to avoid any confusion between past releases with Muscat grapes. The new one features a fantastic design by our wonderful graphist and friend, Ammo.
See you in Spring 2020 for the result.

On tap at Armsby Abbey with Paul and Josh on Zwanze Day 4/20/2024. Pours a hazy orange color with a small bubbly ring of carbonation in the glass. Lemony tart with hints of tart cherry and earthy funk with a touch of grape skin. Smooth nice.

Vinegar, white grape, malt, and musty hay aroma. Hazy golden yellow with small head. Mildly sweet white wine, malt, mild sour acetic acid, and mildly bitter musty hay flavor. Good body.

Armsby draught, 4/20/24. Gentle chill haze. Brass-bronze. Small, white head highs rim. Delicately fruity, grape-forward, but lacking that annoying, punchy acid that dominates so many grape beers. Lovely barnyard quickly follows with light oak and rich, fruity Brett lingering on the finish. Rich, juicy, lush with well-developed viognier character. Bright and rustic with soft barnyard undercurrents and a youthful oakiness. Moderate lactic acidity coupled with Brett. Citrusy almost, at times. The grapes are both wonderfully developed yet also well-integrated. Impressive for (what I assume) is the most recent batch. Excellent balance. Pleasingly tart and round. Malty and well-attenuated.
