Dikke Jan Bruin is a brown / black beer of the Porter or Stout type but in a less sharp but also very tasteful version. The beer is made from pure barley malt, some of which is roasted malt together with a hint of wheat malt and corn flake. This gives both the colour and the typical taste to the beer. The five different malt varieties and three hops give this beer a unique character. Together with a light herbal touch, all this results in a taste worthy of "Dikke Jan"

Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Label: 8.5%. Pours a very dark brown almost black colour with hardly any head. Aromas of chocolate, liquorice, molasses and dry dark fruits. Taste has a bit more dark fruit, molasses, caramel, some wood and a hint more liquorice in the background. Fizzy palate and very thin watery mouthfeel. The alcohol is fairly well hidden but other than that it is a terrible beer. Arguably one of the worst Belgium beers I’ve ever tried. Disappointing.

Bottle from a Carrefour. Pours hazy dark brown with a slowly thinning, foamy, tan head. Aroma of raisin, fig, caramelised popcorn, salted peanut, pear, candi sugar, brioche, molasses. Taste is medium malty sweet, lots of dark fruits (fig, raisin), some pear, caramelly & nutty edges, dough-like; light herbal bitter middle with toast, green tea, metallic note too. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, lingering dough, caramel, dark fruits, bit bittering metallic. Medium body, slick-oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Could have been better...
