In the dense Congolese mountains of the Virunga National Park, HUTWE is a community washing station for coffee beans. To us in West Flanders, it simply sounds like ‘Good Stuff’. The Hutwe coffee variety was sourced directly by Or Coffee from a small Congolese community washing station in the Virunga National Park. The bright citrus-zest fruitiness of both the coffee and the beer compliment each other, with the Saison’s dryness accentuating the coffee variety’s subtle stone-fruit acidity.

Bottle @ home. Clear yellow golden color, huge foamy fizzy white head that diminishes quickly. Heavy coffee bean aroma up front but it subsidies a little after a while. Or, what may be more likely, you get used to it. You get the saison and coffee flavors in the taste as well though nothing more as the flavor is totally overpowered by the very high carbonation. Ok.

Siphon's coffee saison, made with Congolese coffee added in three different ways (see above). Lots of smoke coming out of the bottle upon opening, slow gusher as well but perfectly manageable. Towering high, very frothy, irregular, egg-white, slowly collapsing head leaving behind a huge amount of thick, papier maché-like lacing, sitting atop a lightly hazy pale orange-hued peach blonde beer. Aroma of raw coffee beans but cooked green beans as well, lots and lots of unpleasant, very stinky DMS (overcooked green cabbage), white bread, unripe peach, straw, peanuts, unripe banana, cranesbill leaves. Fruity onset in a restrained kind of way, green banana, green apple and hard pear notes, some light apricot but very low in sweetness, very spritzy, sharpish carbonation adding a strong artificially carbonated mineral water-like effect, dryish middle, old white bread and raw grains, with an overall sourish effect heavily accentuated by the minerally carbonation; light spicy phenolic and near plastic-like notes overpowered by retronasal DMS (I really hate that), some green coffee bean astringency but nothing of the aromatic coffee quality I was hoping for, with a leafy, grassy hop bitterness below. Ends dry, sourish, hop bitterish and as minerally as it began. Weird beer, I can accept the saison designation in terms of spritziness, quenching qualities, dryness and restrained fruitiness, but I was hoping for more aromatic, actual coffee rather than a raw, green coffee bean quality - and I really can't stand DMS, certainly not in this degree. Very disappointing in spite of its originality, this is probably Siphon's poorest beer to date at least for me personally. This brewer can do a lot better.

Thanks to tderoeck, Bierridder_S & Rubin77. Sampled draft @ Brugs Bier Festival 2018. Hazy orange, little white head. Nose is massive green coffee, low vegetable coffee,… Taste is all interesting massively bitter green coffee, raw bitter, green coffee, little else, body is empty outside of the green coffee,… Bit too much green coffee for me but an interesting beer & partially successful one.

Bottle from Geers. Very clear golden colour, when pouring the yeast: cloudy layers in the beer. Lots of green coffee in the aroma, some citrussy notes, grassy dryness, very light roasty. Strange beer but not bad.
