Brewed for tap walls overrun with the white noise of West Coast IPA’s, here’s an offering so exotic, you’d think it was from another world. Like its namesake before it, the axis deer of Southern Asia, so too has this species (beverage?) of hop-forward animal magnetism come to invade the landscape of IPA’s that have long held sway over the taps of Texas’s finest watering holes. Tropical fruit, citrus, and a pale golden body, help keep this breed light on its feet. And with few natural predators there is little anyone can do to stop the spread. IPA may not have been born in Texas, but it will soon seem as native as the sky that stretches between its borders.

Clear golden colour, white head. Hoppy aroma, very fruity, tropical fruits, papaya, citrus. Bitter flavour, hops, sweet note, citrus peel. Fruity finish, lemon rind, fruit loops. Nice! (from 35cL can @ home. Thanks for the can, tderoeck!!)

12oz can at Hyatt Regency, San Antonio, TX, USA. Pours deep gold with moderate white foam, very fine. Aroma is citrus and aromatic. Body is average, with marked carbonation. Taste is intensely bitter, only with some sweetness in the entrance. Finish is long, bitter, fruity.

Clear blond yellow beer, irregular aery yellowish head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: citrus, notes, some pineapple, lemony, little dank, cheesy touch, something off. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: citrus up front, little sweet, fruity, dank fresh hops, grapefruit, little cheesy. Aftertaste: grapefruit, tangerines, fruity, cheesy, pretty bitter, orange peel, some sweet malts, more citrus, cheesy, dry, dank hops.

On tap at Whip In, pours a clear golden blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out piney hops, dank notes and biscuity malt. Flavour is oily, with dank hops, pine and weed. Biscuity malt on the underside, with an oily finish. Not overly impressive, but very pleasant.

Can thanks to wombat23. Pours yellowish with a light haze. A frothy white head lingers. Aroma is a tropical boquet of mango, citrus, berry. Light pine and caramel undertones. Taste is bittersweet with citric notes. A rich malt backbone with plenty of caramel plays overall very nicely with the hops. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall a very nice and well balanced brew.

I tried Axis about a year ago when it was only available from a keg. I spotted a six pack on a recent trip to the grocer and wanted to see if it holds up. Real Ale is a go-to for me for good to very good brews, let us determine if memory holds. Poured ice cold into a tulip glass I see a somewhat hazy, golden liquid followed by a slender, almost-white top. With a smell I get pineapple and fresh cut grass. The taste is interesting, denser than I recall. Light pine, corn, melon, a piece of hard candy. On the heels is a moderate but lasting bitterness. Overall very nice. Yes, it is as I remember. Axis. Rather bold. Bold as love. There, I had to say it.

12 oz. can. Pours Pours a pale golden color with a very slight haze and a small white head. Nose is juicy tropical fruits and citrus. Taste is citrus, tropical fruit, melon, faint berry notes, hints of caramel. Veers a bit off the typical IPA beaten path, but in this case, that's a very good thing.

Half pint cask pour at the Easy Tiger in Austin, Texas. The pour is a hazed orange golden with a minimal white head. The aroma is just popping, super fresh earthy, citrus and pine hops. The taste is super fresh like the nose, with the bright hop notes of earth, orange citrus and pine. Nice cracker bread malt in the background. The palate is light to medium bodied with a soft cask natural carbonation and a bright bitter floral hop finish. Nice one, really worked on cask.
